Rhine Loreley Valley - Germany

Castle Pfalz situated on a rock in the middle of the Rhine by the town of Kaub, looking like a ship with bow, stern and a tower resembling a mast. King Ludwig of Bavaria built the Pfalz in 1327 as border protecion. It later became a toll station for ships with merchandise. Although the castle was modernised in the 17th & 18th centuries the majoritiy is still from the 14th century.

I've always been amazed that the Pfalz bei Kaub survived all the turmoils of war over the centuries. Nice details.
