ORTISEI'S FIRST HOTEL

Ortisei - South Tyrol - Italy

The history of the Hotel Cavallino Bianco can be tracked back to the year 1448. Originally it was one of the oldest farmsteads of St. Ulrich, as the village was then called. For several centuries it was an important station for stagecoaches due to its ideal location in the centre of Ortisei, in the valley of Val Gardena in South-Tyrol.
During the second world war there were hard times for the hotel which was sold for political reasons and taken over by public administration. During the next 2 decades the hotel went to rack and ruin. In 1958 it was bought and then reconstructed to its former glory. It has been much developed and extended since then.
19th century photographs show the first tourists to the town outside this hotel when it was just the beautiful main building on the left, looking much the same as it does now.
