The kelp harvesters on King Island nearly all build a winch to drag the kelp up from the beach using car axles and differentials attached to a motor like this one. The kelp is collected from the beach having been washed up on the beach. Kelp grows on the reefs just off King Island and is detached by the actions of currents and weather.
