Aboard the Orduņa en route to Cuba - December 1938

At sea, en route to Cuba

My parents sailed first from Gdynia, Poland, to Le Havre, France, landing there on November 23, 1938, from where they made their way to the port of La Rochelle, There they boarded the Orduņa, a ship of the Pacific Steam Navigation Company, which was in service to South America and which took them to Cuba, via Liverpool, England, and Bermuda. In a memoir written when she was in her mid-70s, my mother recalled that even though she and my father were refugees with an uncertain future, they decided to treat the voyage as a holiday. This picture suggests that they managed to succeed.

Beautiful photo. My grandfather Yoil Bronstein sailed on the Orduña in 1927 en route to Peru. I have imagined his time on the ship many times and try to recreate it based on oral histories and the diary of my grandparents who came from Germany in 1938 to Peru. Would like to know more about what your mom recalls during their time on the ship. Any descriptions? Which class they traveled? My grandfather was from Romania, Bessarabia and traveled on third class. Please write me at merzbacheryvette@bluewin.ch Looking forward to meet you. Beautiful website. Thank you.
