Felicia, my mother's sister, is on the right in this picture. The resemblance to my mother is striking. Next to her is her husband, Szymon, holding their son Ted. The identities of the people to their left are not known.
Szymon (Simon) Hopensztadt, a physician specializing in physiotherapy, was inducted into the Polish Army in July 1939. According JewishGen.org he was taken prisoner by the Soviet Army in Tarnopol on December 17, 1939 and murdered with 4,000 other officers by the NKVD at Katyn Forest in Russia in 1940. Ted’s mother Felicia (my mother’s sister) and Ted were sent to an internment camp in a remote village in the Soviet Union, where they managed to survive the war. Afterwards, they made their way to France and lived in Paris for several years where Felicia was remarried to Edward Bader. Felicia, Edward, and Ted came to the U.S. in the early 1950s. Ted later became a physician. He’s now retired and lives in Texas. Felicia died several years ago.
