My mother's brother Stasiek and family - April 1939

Warsaw

After they arrived in Cuba and before communications with the war-torn countries were cut, my mother exchanged many letters with her parents and siblings. My mother’s brother, Stanislaw (Stasiek) initially remained in Poland with his wife, Eva, and two young sons Aleksander (b. 1934) and Michal (b. 1938). Stasiek sent my mother this photo during that time. I guess he thought he looked like Al Capone (which he did – a little) since he labeled this picture (in Polish) “Al Capone and family.” After the Germans and Soviets invaded, a few months later, Stasiek was deported to the USSR while his wife and children remained in Warsaw. They perished either in the Warsaw Ghetto or in a concentration camp.
