I was trying to capture the shapes of summer on this shoot. Yes, summer has a shape here. It's hard, it's flat, it's harsh. Unfortunately just as I shot this a rare cloud decided to filter the sun. It provided no respite from either heat or humidity but it dulled the harsh light that was originally part of my shooting plan. I would have waited it out but time was running short on my lunch break and the cloud decided to stay where it was.
As I've mentioned previously the Pyrmont docks were once working wharves with rail lines running down to them. These are the remains of some such lines.
I had a number of other shots from this day but felt that this one was the most apt. It was on this day that some of my colleagues who have seen their jobs outsourced to India were told that there will be no alternative opportunities for them with the company. Looking at the corporate reports we're down about 2 and a half thousand positions since mid-2013.
That's a lot of livelihoods. That's a lot of money flowing out of the local economy. That's a lot of people who won't be spending as much directly or indirectly with the company.
Still, the Indians are laughing. (At us, most likely, for being so stupid and short-sighted.)
