130224_075053_28875 The Silver Surfer, Or Lies, Damned Lies, And Weather Forecasts (Sun 24 Feb 13)

Sandon Point Beach, Illawarra, NSW

You would almost think that I had done a B&W conversion on this, but I haven't; I haven't needed to. The sea was churned up so much by recent weather conditions and the morning sun so strong that the scene was essentially reduced to a limited range of greys anyway.

And I've broken one of the cardinal rules of composition having the subject right in the centre... {Homer, not the Greek one} Oooorrrr haaaave Iiii? {/Homer, not the Greek one} For one thing I think of the Rule Of Thirds as less a rule and more a guideline, and secondly I see the "steps" of the breaking waves as being as much the subject as the surfer himself. Or more precisely, I think of his relative insignificance in the face of the incoming ocean as the subject. Consequently some part of my subject runs right through the thirds.

Of course the shot wasn't supposed to be like this. The weather forecast last night was for heavy rain, and southerly winds of up to 80km/h. In fact despite it still being mostly overcast (but with large gaps in the cloud letting the sun through as seen here) and sprinkling occasionally, there has been barely any rain at all this morning and there are no significant winds, and certainly no southerly ones. With temperatures in the mid 20's and still climbing, we're on track for another sodding sauna of a day. This is good in that heavy rains and high winds would have caused some damage (two people have died as a result of the rains in northern NSW), but less good in that there will be no cooling. After a few days of intensely bad forecasts which did not come to pass (as alluded to in yesterday's PAD as well) I suspect that the Bureau of Meteorology are covering their backsides by making the absolute worst-case forecast, even if it turns out to be way off base.

What a lovely idea this shoot. The reflections and the minimalist composition allied with the BW run so well.

I wish our weather was so interesting and diverse.
I love the silvery sea, the comp is really fine. A great job, Alan.

Placing the figure in the centre highlights the size of the waves.
Love the silvery tones in this natural mono.

I find the comp perfectly acceptable which is more than what can be said about the results of the weather in your area in the last few hours.
NSW on the whole has had a terrible fews days AGAIN this month.

This is a beautiful image. I love the tiny surfer in the huge sea and the tones are wonderful. V.

Stunning shot. ~V~
The way I think about compositional rules is this: If you have an image that you judge to be good, and you are aware that this image violates a rule of good composition, then you have two choices. You can decide that the image is not so good, or you can decide that the rule has exceptions. I think the latter course is the most reasonable.

Rules....I think that you nailed this. First, the rest of the image is huge! You've made a point that this is not a small pond, and then there is the lone surfer....standing in this huge ocean. The waves at the top converging into the corner and there is no land in sight. I like this a lot!
