You would almost think that I had done a B&W conversion on this, but I haven't; I haven't needed to. The sea was churned up so much by recent weather conditions and the morning sun so strong that the scene was essentially reduced to a limited range of greys anyway.
And I've broken one of the cardinal rules of composition having the subject right in the centre... {Homer, not the Greek one} Oooorrrr haaaave Iiii? {/Homer, not the Greek one} For one thing I think of the Rule Of Thirds as less a rule and more a guideline, and secondly I see the "steps" of the breaking waves as being as much the subject as the surfer himself. Or more precisely, I think of his relative insignificance in the face of the incoming ocean as the subject. Consequently some part of my subject runs right through the thirds.
Of course the shot wasn't supposed to be like this. The weather forecast last night was for heavy rain, and southerly winds of up to 80km/h. In fact despite it still being mostly overcast (but with large gaps in the cloud letting the sun through as seen here) and sprinkling occasionally, there has been barely any rain at all this morning and there are no significant winds, and certainly no southerly ones. With temperatures in the mid 20's and still climbing, we're on track for another sodding sauna of a day. This is good in that heavy rains and high winds would have caused some damage (two people have died as a result of the rains in northern NSW), but less good in that there will be no cooling. After a few days of intensely bad forecasts which did not come to pass (as alluded to in yesterday's PAD as well) I suspect that the Bureau of Meteorology are covering their backsides by making the absolute worst-case forecast, even if it turns out to be way off base.
