The problem (or is it advantage?) with doing a Photo A Day (PAD) gallery is that you're forever looking for anything that could serve as a subject. You need to find a shot, ideally not a bad shot (well, not too bad), and better still a shot that you can learn something from.
After my original PAD plan fell through on one particular day, I was indeed on the scrounge for a subject and as the first alternative took some shots of my car at the car wash. Going for a somewhat abstract feel I shortened the depth of field by opening up all the way, and shot the foam that the foaming brush had lain across the car's boot with the tiles of the wash bay in the background.
Then of course when I got the image open in Photoshop I realised that the white foam on a white car with white tiles in the background had caused underexposure (duh!) which I hadn't compensated for, and it was time to hit the levels adjustment layer.
Useful training for the possibility that I (finally) hit the snowfields this year though.
Needless to say this shot didn't make the PAD gallery and may well be a future candidate for the Salon Des Refuses one, but I'm leaving it here for the moment as a reminder to me about exposure compensation.
