At the time of my third visit to Melbourne, the public plaza Federation Square (opposite Flinders Street railway station) was playing host to a light and sound public art exhibit called Volume.

Volume was created by the UK-based group United Visual Artists. It consists of luminous LED columns which generate light and sound in response to people moving through them. This gallery contains three images of the artwork.

The soundtrack of Volume was arranged by Neil Davidge and Robert Del Naja of Massive Attack.

When I originally wrote this I said that "More information can be found on the Federation Square web site", but any such information has long since been removed and the web site itself is largely useless these days.

As of August 2024, there is still some information on the United Visual Artists site which describes the work as:
A performative work, Volume’s field of 48 luminous, sound-emitting columns respond to movement, creating a direct multi-layered relationship between the individual and a single column, and at a larger scale the powerful experience of the sculpture in its entirety as visitors weave a path through it creating their own unique journey in light and music.

Second edit, August 2024. This shows how much life can change without you noticing. I've been compiling a log of all of the trips that I've made. It has mostly been based on hotel bookings. This trip wasn't on it. "Hmm, that's odd", I think, "How long was I here and where did I stay?" Then I noticed there was only one gallery for the trip. And there were photos from Mascot in the early morning, and Tullamarine that afternoon.

Yup, I had flown down early in the morning just for a day of photo shooting. I would never even consider that these days. But back then I was on a very good income (which is still not bad, but it hasn't kept up with inflation), flights were cheaper, I didn't have a mortgage, and my rent was cheap because my place at the time was... not a total dump, but on the dump-ish side of "nice". Yes, back in 2009 cheapish rents were still a thing.

In fact this was so unusual by my 2024 standards that while I remember some of the shots I took, I didn't remember hitting Melbourne for a single day like that. But clearly, I did.

Addendum: My personal opinion is that Facebook is a sociopathic organisation that steals other peoples' intellectual property (including the images in this gallery) despite being explicitly denied permission to do so.
