We were taxiing to the gate at ATL when I took the photo. This image depicts the view from the airside portion of the airport. There is an enclosed air-conditioned walkway from a concourse to the terminal over the roadway and several Eastern Airlines aircraft in the background. This new terminal opened only one month before, on May 3, 1961 and cost $21 million to construct. At the time it was proclaimed to be the largest in the country, being able to accommodate over six million travelers a year. This new terminal was stretched past its capacity the very first year when nine and half million people passed though. In 1967, the city of Atlanta and the airlines began to work on a master plan for future development of Atlanta Municipal Airport and eventually this terminal was destroyed.
