Northern Pudu

Papallacta, Pichincha

A rare and very infrequently seen animal. The smallest deer in the World. This is by far the best image I have seen taken in the wild.

Hello Roger
I am writing a general reference book A Guide to the Deer of the World, to be published in 2022 in the UK by Quiller Publishing. It will cover all cervids, musk deer and chevrotains.
Sourcing photographs of some species is, however, proving to be a serious challenge. Would you be prepared to let me use this one? I am afraid that, as the publication is only for a limited market, I have no funding available but full photographic credit will, of course be given.
I hope that you can help - my email is gcsmithjones@outlook.com
Very best wishes
Charles Smith-Jones

Hi Lieven

I have never heard of Pudú at Yanacocha but they are so secretive that they are very rarely seen. Most guides I know here in Ecuador have never seen one and I got lucky with this one crossing the road in front of the car a couple of times.

Cheers
Roger

Hi Roger,

I saw Northern Pudu in Feb. 2010 at Yanacocha. A picture (full-frame, but reduced to lower quality) can be found on observado but I am not allowed to include links here. (search for northern pudu)

I didn't know the name nor ID at that time, until Diego Calderon saw the picture on my Facebook and claimed it was a very good observation. I came on your pbase by googling for more pictures of this nice little deer.

I remember it was not shy at all, and it was walking towards me for approx. 2-3 minutes, slowly grazing.

Best regards,
Lieven
