This rare antique paper box contained 50-count .44 caliber cartridges for Winchester rifles and Colt revolvers of the late 1800s. This was the first generally available metallic cartridge designed first for the Model 1873 Winchester and later adopted by Colt for their 1873 Peacemaker revolver so that owners would only have to carry one type of ammo. It is the "bullet that won the west."
Also shown is a .44 WCF (Winchester Center Fire) bullet mold, made by Winchester Repeating Arms of New Haven, CT. in the late 1800s. Sometimes it was necessary to make your own bullets and reload your own ammo if store-bought ammo was not available.
