Growing up in the Australian 'bush', we always seemed to have
'rescued' animals as pets. Kangaroos or wallabies, and various
parrots and magpies. This young 'roo was one such animal.
Normally, 'roos would be found on the roadside, orphaned
when a car had struck the mother. We would raise them to
young adulthood (often from hairless and helpless babies),
and then open the gate and set them free. Most left for the
great outdoors. A few would stay around, at least for a while
- likely addicted to a daily handout of bread crust. For whatever
reason, I became the chief 'animal keeper'. It was an enjoyable job.
I remember taking at least one young 'roo to school on 'Pet Day'.
