Day One, Tour One

Off Cap St. Jacques, South Vietnam

This is a gritty old Kodachrome which has seen better days. But it holds plenty of memories
of "feelings". I went to South Vietnam by sea, on a troopship. We knew we would arrive just
at dawn, so we could disembark by landing craft or helicopter, and then get to our base and settle in before
nightfall. So, we went to bed the prior evening, at sea, safe, and still "in Australia" in our minds.
Before sunrise the next day, a trip to the outside rails provided the sights, sounds and aromas of
landfall off the coast of Cap St. Jacques (Vung Tau). Gazing to the shoreline and the mountains,
we could only imagine what lay ahead. As it turned out, we got to know a lot about the
mountains in the image, and the lands on the horizon and well beyond. And some who gazed
at this sight with me that early morning would never gaze on their own homeland again.
'At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we shall remember them."

Colin ... here's my first view of the Vietnam Coast in March of 1967 somewhere off of Cam Ranh Bay ... we had 3500 troops on this old WWII troop ship (the USNS Upshur which we nicknamed The Upchuck) ... took us 28 days to cross the Pacific with 4-hour stops in Hawaii, Yokohama and Okinawa. We were glad to get off ...http://www.pbase.com/tombriggs/image/65229641
