The Death of Colonel Cameron

Up we Rushed! wrote one of the Highlanders. "The first fire swept our ranks like a quick darting pestilence." "Come on my brave Highlanders," shouted Colenel James Cmaeron...The first fire hit them halfway up the offivers ran though the ranks, yelling "Rally boys - Rally!" and the men responded. They marched on, only to receive another heavy volley, which left [Col.] Cameron mortally wounded.

Again chaos reigned. The Highlanders mistook a Confederate flag for a Union one and ceased firing. "As we lowered our arms and were about to rally where the banner floated." wrote a Highlander, "We were met by a terrible raking fire, against which we could only stagger." The Highlanders fell back down the kill. "As we passed down we saw our Colonel lying still in the hands of death."
