We have never found out why this alcove is in the wall, there is nothing in the room which corresponds with it.
The curve of the wall is a bit of a mystery too!!

I like it too! Is it deep enough to support a plant pot of some kind? Perhaps an ivy hanging down? That would be charming.

Looks like the place was built to hold a temperature gage, a sun and a thermometer so I think it speaks for itself! LOL! I actually like this little alcove!
