Succession

Kingston Springs, TN

I was out observing all of the perennials that have succeeded in a field
just cleared from a thick forrest one year ago. I was truly amazed.

The tall spikes are Verbascum thapsus (Common Mullein). The orange-yellow
Asters at the base and spotted throughout are Rudbeckia hirta (Black-
Eyed Susans). The white clouds dominant in the field are Erigeron
philadelphicus (Common Fleabane) which area also Asters as are the spots
of Thistle that the Finches and Bluebirds flock to.

I've never seen mullein so well presented before Scott. The cluster of black-eyed susans really makes for a beautiful composition.
