Charlie Greenlaw, 1966

Nevada City

As of 2009, 43 years after the picture was taken, Charlie says he is still riding the same Cinelli. I keep looking for one on eBay. I had one about this time but sold it in '68.

1966 pre-dated the advent of very satisfactory Campagnolo side-pull brakes, hence my use of Mafacs. On a second bike dating from 1970, the Campy brakes have a different feel in the lever pull (firmer) but I like them too, I find that the metal used in the various wheel rims I used have different frictional properties for the same brake pads.

Cinelli only sold frame and fork sets for assembly by customer dealers and their customer riders using their own choice of components, as I did using some of my 1957-vintage Peugeot items and some new Campy items. I greatly favored Mafac brakes for their pad alignment features and proven adequacy in two earlier Nevada City races. This 1966 N.C. race was its 2nd after first being assembled 8 days earlier and used to win a 25-mile time trial the next morning in Oakland. Those Mafacs are still installed, now with other-mfr's pads and gearing is as low as New Record changers will accommodate.

Charlie is still riding that bike. Same Mafac Racer brakes I'm sure.

Just rode with Charlie tonight, by chance. Still on the Cinelli!
