Joel Brand

Sarajevo

Joel was a vegetarian, as was Kurt Schork. There wasn't a lot to eat in Sarajevo, but the staff at the Holiday Inn did their best to keep the journalists and other foreign visitors fed. For Joel and Kurt they made a special effort, making sure they got enough vegetarian fare to keep them going. I hope the Holiday Inn chain is aware of how their staff performed during the war. I once stayed in a room which had been hit with an RPG, or maybe a Zolya. The hole had been covered with UN-supplied plastic sheeting. In a tantrum over something I smashed a small end table....and was charged $75 for damages. On one hand, it was sort of comical to be charged for the damage while staying in a room which had been hit by an anti-tank weapon. At the same time, I appreciated the staff's efforts to maintain a civilized hotel despite the conditions of war.
