Mt. St. Helens lost her "ice-cream cone" look and came to look like this after the devastating eruption of May 18, 1980. 1,100 feet was taken off the top of the mountain. Inside the caldera a lava dome is growing and someday the mountain will once again have that characteristic snow-capped appearance. One more thing....I'm a proponent of using the ancient names for the Pacific Northwest volcanoes. Mt. St. Helens is Loowit. Mt. Hood is Wy'east.
