Ancient fortress in a modern war

Ancient stones are tough. A modern artillery shell which can shred a shiny new hotel will bounce off stones laid by the Romans. This is at Mali Ston, a beautiful town where salt has been produced since prehistoric times. At night I sat outside at a cafe with no lights on. A group of soldiers was playing cards and whenever a dog would bark in the distance they'd stop talking and listen. Each time a dog barked it was closer. Finally one man said "that's my Bozho." The soldiers picked up their rifles and headed up the road to meet the invaders.

From a Dalmatian reference: "Presumably the Ston salt pans were used already in prehistoric times, judging by the abundant finds in the early Iron Age graves on the isthmus."
