On July 6, 2013, the scrapping of the notorious pirate fishing vessel Bergun Perkassa was coming to a close. Metal recyclers had removed all the fittings and the hazardous parts of the vessel and were proceeding with cutting up the remainder of the hull. According to NOAA over $2.1 million dollars has been spent on the vessel. Senator Mark Begich wanted to sink it after it was seized over two years ago off Japan. Even at One Dollar there were no buyers.
