On the subject of demise - today's news confirms Codona's will no longer be seen on the front at Helensburgh as their annual licence will not be renewed, to make way for new developments there.

Better take care of the wee fair that parks itself on Rothesay's esplanade.

I saw an interesting BBC4 programme recently (Timeshift) on the history of the steamers, of which Waverley and Balmoral are the last-remaining. New bridges, car ferries and the package holiday led to their demise in the Bristol Channel and on the Clyde. Sad, but glad we've still got Waverley on the Clyde
