Strathalbyn - Valley of the Scots





The plains around the Angas River, at the foot of the southern Mount Lofty ranges,
were settled soon after the colony of South Australia was established. The first
to take up land there was Dr. John Rankine, one of 105 Scottish immigrants who arrived
at Holdfast Bay near Adelaide on the "Fairfield" in 1839. The foresight of these
early pioneers in keeping the picturesque riverbanks and parkland, and reserving
an adjacent site for their St. Andrews church is evident today. the town has over
30 heritage listed buildings to admire. "Old Strathalbyn and its people" a book
compiled by Nancy Gemmell for the National Trust is recommended reading for the history buff.
