On Friday November 3 2006, after over 4 years of restoration and expansion the famed Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles was reopened to the public. I was one of the lucky ones to be able to visit on opening day. One can no longer simply drive up to the 1935 structure but must purchase shuttle tickets in advance.

Although opening day for the most part was quite overcast I was quite impressed with the newly restored and expanded facility. The Griffith Observatory is a true piece of Los Angeles history. As a native southern Californian I can remember first visiting in the early 1950's. The old observatory brings back fond memories for me. For those of you not familiar with Griffith Observatory it is a true Los Angeles landmark having been built in 1935. It rests high in the Hollywood hills in Griffith Park overlooking Hollywood and Downtown Los Angeles.

OK, enough of that. Here you will see some of the impressions of the place. Photography is freely allowed almost everywhere except for inside the Planetarium itself (when the show is going on).

I will be going back some day and take more photos on hopefully a sunnier or partially clouded day :-).
