A passionately disputed region and now partially recognized independent republic in the heart of the Balkans, Kosovo is a predominantly mountainous territory known for its mix of cultural influences and simmering ethnic tensions. Still claimed by Serbia as the autonomous province of Kosovo and Metohija (of which it was still legally recognized at the time of my visit), it is a beautiful land of welcoming people and fascinating historical sites.
