Iga Ueno-jō 伊賀上野城

Iga, Mie-ken, Japan view map

Iga Ueno Castle's construction began in 1585, with most of it being overseen by local daimyō Tsutsui Sadatsugu. While the original plans called for a five-storey donjon, the structure was destroyed by a typhoon in 1612 before it was completed. In the aftermath of the destruction of the Toyotomi family, restoration plans were largely abandoned, leaving the castle without a donjon. A three-storey donjon was finally rebuilt in 1935, using primarily wood (as opposed to the concrete of most modern reconstructions).
