Amanohashidate 天橋立

One of the three famed "scenic views" in Japan (along with Matsushima and Miyajima), Amanohashidate - or "The Bridge to Heaven" - sits at the base of rural Tango Peninsula in northern Kyōto Prefecture. A 3.5-kilometer spit of white sand and lush pine trees, the village-flanked site remains one of Japan's most celebrated spots, despite the inevitable tourist schlock that its status attracts.
