Jan. 2006: I've always wanted a Mid Century Modern house. I found this cool neighborhood called Copa Villa in St. Louis with some really great little MCM homes. The best one on the street, design wise, is going up for sale and I'm DROOLING! Needs landscaping work and definitely need to replace that stupid front door.
UPDATE: 5/8/10 ~ Well, the house is now for sale, quite overpriced too.
I went to see it, and about cried - they put in a new kitchen....
maple shaker cabinets, stainless steel, granite, and 15" floor tile.
IT'S HORRIBLE!!! This is an amazing MCM home, screaming for a period kitchen!
Fortunately they left the original cabinetry in the hall bath, which has the classic mid century angle to it. (Deeper at the top than the bottom.) The countertop was replaced - I think it's soapstone.
Not horrible, but a Boomerang Formica pattern would have been fabulous.
THANK GOD they didn't remove the totally cool built in 50's wet bar in the "Florida" room.
UPDATE: 3/13/11 ~ The house ended up selling as a short sale for $165K. Lucky new owners! Alas, they are not keeping the fabulous bar, but YAY, they are offering it up on Craigslist for free! I can't use it, but let them know if they didn't have any takers, I'd try to find a home for it. Hate to see it go to the dump. I clipped their pix from CL and added them to the gallery.
Entry Sign - Fabulous!
Entry Sign
The House :) It's being rehabbed, thus the soaped and papered windows.
Another View - Notice row of windows on top of the right side angled part!
Note that the bottom row of windows across the house are those glass slat kind that crank open.
Carport connected to glass room has a built in stone planter.
I about fainted when I saw the built in 50's bar! It even has a sink :)
Bar shot from other side. Aside from this room that has a cement floor, the rest of the house has hardwood.

Big back patio - more brick planters.
Another house a few doors down. Looks tame, but bet it's great inside.
Across the street.
Across street too. Much cooler than picture, this one has a center chimney and the middle of the house appears completely open.
Closer view of curved courtyard wall.
Down the street. Not quite as cool, but still like the courtyard.
To anyone who finds this page and is interested in an update. My wife and I purchased this house a few months ago (the short sale mentioned below). We did find someone to take the bar, which was awesome, but didn't fit our lifestyle and took up a lot of valuable wall space in the Florida room. We are keeping everything else intact or trying to make it more MCM-like. The kitchen is on our long-term todo list, but unfortunately, it is a brand new kitchen and we really can't afford to change it at this time.
We recently repainted the exterior and are in the process of updating the front door to something more appropriate. We have also done some repairs to the awesome Copa Villa sign which is on our property. We created a Facebook page (www.copavilla.com) and will be posting pictures as soon as I have time.
smithie: If the previous owner would have priced it reasonably at first, he could have sold it. He listed it at $260K to start! Anyway, it turned into a short sale. I emailed the new owners when I saw the bar listed on Craigslist. Aside from needing the space where the bar was, they are most definitely going to respect the home the way it should be.
