Nicky has uploaded a video from 1963 when the dam was being constructed. The video was made by his grandfather. He recently posted a comment on the scenery gallery and that's where I got in touch with him. It's an amazing insight into the past! The handheld color video camera must have been the state of the art camera of 1963!

Mangla Dam:
World’s third largest earth-filled dam is only 115-km south-east of Rawalpindi. One has to turn left from Dina Town and the dam on river Jehlum is about 16 km to the east. The dam is 3,353 meters long and 116 meters high above the river bed. It is designed to store 5.88 MAF water and also used for power generation. In the centre of the dam there is a Gakkhar Fort from where one can have a panoramic view of the lake.

Hello--my family lived in Mangla 63-68! My dad ran the concrete making plant. I graduated high school there and recognize many of your names and the dam sites. Gorgeous color and great job on the photos--they bring back fond memories of the remarkable experience we all had living and growing up in Pakistan.

Hello to all who were at Mangla. My father was a teacher and later head master at the school there. He passed in Germany in 1969, my brother Gene in 1994, but all the rest of us are still here. The times from1962-68 we spent in Pakistan are still vital and treasured. I have been to a reunion, but have not made any since. The photos of the dam and spillway are incredible. I would love to return some day, but who knows. It is a great memory of an important for Pakistan and for the lives all those who were fortunate enough to travel there and learn another culture and world.

Wow! I just stumbled on this site. The photos are great. Why didn't my sister mention it to me? My father worked on the dam and we lived there from 1963 to 1969. I have a very bad memory and don't recall any names but would love to hear more. I had a fantastic time growing up there, nothing but great memories. We are a large family; parents Ed and Bertha Miller; siblings Jeanie, Butch, Rick, Dave, and John (he was born there). It would be great to hear from others who were there at that time. Pakistan changed my life forever. What a place! Wow - finding these photos and comments is a pretty intense experience. My dad worked on the dam and we lived in Baral Colony from 1962 to 1966 (just before my 7th birthday until before my 10th). I don't remember the address, it was by the wall, and near the Maddoxes (Cliff Maddox was in my high school class in Sedalia MO as well - a lot of us whose folks worked for Atkinson kept running into each other). The Bowlby family (Sharon McNabb Bowlby, Jeff's big sister, was the mom) were good friends of my family for a long time. Mangla holds a magical place in my heart, too many vivid sensory recollections to easily catalog. If there are other websites where folks who lived there share stuff, I'd love to hear. I feel a real sense of gratitude for having had a chance to live there at an early age, to develop relationships with many different types of people, and to have the realization that we are all brothers and sisters - it has made my life better, and hopefully, made me a better person.

Malik, Irshad Sahib, Miss Sufi Badr, I passed my ninth class from Mangla and did my secondary school exam from Saigolabad, Then higher Secondary from Gordon College Rawalpindi.I use to live in Lala Zar colony house # 15 or like that.Now a days i am woking with King Faisal University Saudi Arabia,, To be very hoonest i miss my old friends Iftikhar, Zulifqar, Pervez, Tasneem, Riffat ,Samra Roohi and Nelo far Rahman. In last days 1967 School issued a book with the pho graph of each student, if any body have that please inform me. Hello everyone - Jackie Appleby, my old chum, sent me this website - The Willams Family, Mary, David, Carolyn, Mark, Don, Dan & Jennifer were in Mangla from April 1963 to September 1968 - I went to one reunion with my older sister, Mary, in 1990 in Chico. Would love to go again. I am in touch with Silver (Carl) Miller mostly but my contemporaries over there were Jeff McNabb, John Post, Don Hutchinson, Debbie Rogers, Pam Philpot and so many more....Please keep us informed of upcoming reunions - although Silver usually lets me know....I think Year 2000 was in Millbrae - Carolyn Bordeaux (Williams)

Hi and slam to all.I'm Zaheer Sial from Faisalabad.My mamu (uncle) lives at Mangla Dam Employees Colony Mangla. He's a doctor at Wapda Hospital.I'd my first trip ever to Mangla in October 2006. I had some photage but i'm unable to up-load it at the moment.But i'm sure of doing this very soon.The Dam, The Power House and its surroundings look really awesome.Now the Government of Pakistan is constructing a world class resort for tourists visiting Mangla. It is named Mangla View Tourist Resort.Also the Mangla Fort and the holy shrine of Laal Badshah are good places enough to amuse the tourists.Pakistan Army has Constructed a Boarding Club at Mangla Cantt which is open for public also. Hi, My grandfather Eric Hutchinson was the chief engineer ( I think) in 1963 during the construction of the mangla dam project. The good thing is he loved his cinecamera and took great film footage during the said build. and am sure I could cut this footage from the rest of the home movie and set it up on a webpage for all who are interested to download.

Just another past Mangla resident from the past, (1964-1967) These were some great pictures and I have always wanted to put up a web site to share those great days at MIS and the Dam. My dad put the mole together that bored the holes through the mountain. He also worked in the Euclid shop until the end. I remember skinny Jeff McNab. I use to hang around with Walter Bartholomew a lot and spent a lot of time at the Fort. Maybe someday I will get that web site up and we can figure a way to get a reunion. I have a lot of my dad's old 35MM slides from 1961 to 1968. I even have a few of those pictures from around the pool with Debbie Rodgers, Cheryl Rolling, Lana Maddox and Vicki Brandow. I was doing a search of Mangla. I was there in about 1963. My dad worked for Euclid. I was in 5th grade there. Lots of fuzzy memories. I wish I could go back to see the fort and friends. Thanks for the pictures! Where can I see more? Is there a listserve for kids who attended school near the dam?

Hi Jeffrey McNabb, Thanks for the appreciation, the photos are from the early days of my first camera, and I uploaded them just to share them with my friends (rather than everyone giving their hard disks to me; there were no USB disks back then in 2002). I didn't write appropriate captions back then, and I've been lazy/busy to do that, I'll appreciate if you can help me out with some captions here because I don't know how to describe them best. About Ken or Jane Bradley, I'm sorry Jane didn't leave her email address with the comment (I can see the email addresses when I'm logged in, but they are not publicly viewable, to avoid spam). Back then I had no idea that my casual snapshots will touch so many people, I hope to visit the area again and take more, better pics. Thanks and regards, Waqas

My father was the project manager at Mangla, in charge of construction; I lived there 6 yrs, from 10 yrs old until 16 yrs old and it was truly awesome; I recall Ken Bradley (above) but not Jane Bradley (perhaps Gunnerson??); these photos are tremendous,, thank you

I typed in Mangla Dam because I was curious about where I had lived all those months when I was 10 whilst my father worked on the electrical side of the building of the dam. It was a memorable experience and we travelled lots. I went to the international school and have memories to this day of the people I met and our whole way of life. I do nnot remember ever being homesick. School finished at 3 pm and we just spent afternoons in the swimming pool. Also I loved root beer and those yummy doughnuts and I r emember weevils in the cereal packets.

I am taken with your photography of Mangla Dam. My family lived in Baral Colony while the dam was being built and I went to the International School there. My Father worked on the dam and my Mother was a supervisor at the hospital. Your photographs bring back many great memories of our stay in Pakistan. I never got to see the dam after completion. We left in November of 1964 and I have always wanted to return to visit with old friends and see the finished project. Thank you for your great shots
