I tried to get a picture of Mt. Pavlov, but the sky was too overcast. This view is looking east from the radar site. It is the direction that I traveled the most when combing the shores of the Izembek Lagoon. On one occasion, I turned a bend and saw a massive, unusual object on the beach. As I approached, I realized that it was a dead creature that had washed up on shore. I proceeded toward it cautiously, not knowing if there were bears present. The dogs with me were going nuts. That made me nervous, to say the least. As I approached closer and closer, I realized that this was a great sea mammal the likes of which I had never seen before! I walked around it, finally deciding that actually I had seen one once in the water at a zoo, but never from this close. It was a sea elephant. I was amazed at its enormous size! Later, while walking back to the Site, I thought about what an amazing place I was experiencing here at Cold Bay.
