The Port of Oakland has recreated a vast expanse of shoreline habitat amid the working port itself.
With a mixture of "native" habitat, park sculpture, a working crane for offloading cargotainer
ships, and lights for night work, it can make for some bizarre birding.
I watched these Canadas purposely make their way uphill to face the oncoming
cooling breeze while basking in the sun. The two on the right are on their stomachs.
The one on the left is standing sentinel as at least one always does. You can also see
the follow-the-leader trail they made on their way up.
