Indians and early Spanish explorers thought the gorge inaccessible. Yet the lure of financial gain from catering to tourists led the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad to build a railway through parts of The Black Canyon of the Gunnison. One trestle and this old train are now on display. Much of the rest is underwater as the result of the damning of the river. As a child, I vividly remember driving through some parts of the canyon that are now under water. Sigh...
