Jan 5: Worse by design

I've decided to fix some of the problems on the car in an attempt to get a year or two more life out of it. I've already tacked the dodgy idle and the rear pads. On to the odometer light. Being a relatively modern car, it has an LCD odometer, and the backlight bulb failed a couple of years back. We have no idea of the milage. All we know is that it's more than 120,000 miles. That's that last number we saw before the display went black. So, new bulb purchased, time to dismantle the dash to fit it. It's not any easy task, Vauxhall made sure of that, cleverly hiding the mounting screws behind vents that are next to impossible to remove without breaking them. 'Better by Design' my ar**! But, I persisted and after an hour or so found that I had the wrong bulb. No problem, I can make that work. Another hour and the dash was back in and I turned on the ignition only to find that we still have no idea of the mileage. There it was clear as day -] ] - -. .Yes there it was. Sometime since the bulb blew, the LCD display has corrupted. I'm a bit cross. Here's the failed bulb.

Well, David, thanks for the advice. When the bulb goes on my Vauxhall, I shall ignore it and think of you.

I would have done a John Cleese at that point and taken a branch to the car. :-)

I know I wouldn't have the patience to do that kind of exercise. My language would be very spiced. I'm not a mechanic and i don't play one on tv :)

That sounds seriously frustrating, I'd have been thrashing the car with a branch, Basil Fawlty style, by the end of that saga. Glad you calmed down enough to take a great macro shot though. I like this a lot, the focus on the failed filament is fab. (I should get an award for that alliteration)

I don't understand this quite, yet I admire your effort.
