13 - Silence

47 year old grandmother, Madame Marguerite Rouffanche, was the only survivor who witnessed the massacre in the church.
She was able to escape thru one of the broken windows behind the alter (image #11), then leaping 9 feet (3 meters) down to the ground.
Although hit by gunfire and wounded 4 times in the legs and once in the shoulder, she crawled to the garden and hid until she was rescued.
It took a year for Madame Rouffanche to recover from her wounds; however, in 1953 she was able to testify before a French military tribunal in Bordeaux describing the massacre of the women and children within the church...

A horrific, well captured and well documented series Stephanie. One wonders how mankind can be so cruel and beastly.

That poor woman, the agony she endured both watching the massacre and then being
so badly injured. I hope the perpetrators got their just deserts in time! v
