Timika, Papua

A rare window of opportunity arose to visit Papua, the little-known western half of the island of New Guinea, when a travel agency in Darwin, Australia, began operating charter flights to Timika on the southern coast. From Timika, a spectacular company road climbs - literally - into the clouds to reach Tembagapura ("copper town"), the operating township for the world's richest copper and gold mine. Up here, close to the equator, a glacier can be seen from the mine site when the cloudbanks lift.

I have travelled throughout Papua and Papua Barat and it make me feel that I was in a "lost world " but I feel at home. I always received a warm welcome not as a friend but as member of a family and there's always a helping hands to all my needs during my travel. In Papua is where I learned the meaning of family and brotherhood, and sincerely hope I will return to Papua soon. Papua a "lost world" to me with all the beauty of nature-GOD'S CREATION and the very reason I conclude deep in heart that Papua is the Last Paradise on this Planet. So let protect Papua the beauty of nature for our future generations- Protect God's Creation not destroy. Blessed PAPUA.

Just got back from a visit to Timika West Papua and Ambon, lovely people, we were made most welcome everywhere we went. The scenery is stunning and so is the wildlife.

Is Grasberg perhaps the most striking example of man's ability to define one's environment? Is bot the the entropy level fantastic? An amazing, heroic example of freedom and the essential tenets of the bloodless revolution of 1688 at work. Even Thomas Jefferson would be proud. aku lahir dan besar di timika jadi aku tau semua perkembangan timika dari masih kampung sampai jadi kota satelit seperti saat ini.sekarang saya sudah jauh darinya tapi hatiku masih tetap merindukan timika. i miss you so much TIMIKA.

I could see that many parts of Papua are very beautiful, especially at Grasberg Timika. However there are still problems that need to be solved specificially in Timika City, such as the following: * Rubbish still could be found almost everywhere * many parts of Timika still need more attentions * Roads need to fixed, some holes still can be found. * Need more traffic lights. I am hoping that Timika city would be as beautiful as Tembagapura, and in the end the visitor would love to see cities in Papua.

This is the first time i see what timika really is, eventhough its a place where precious minerals are mined but the development interms of infrastructure and the well being of the population is still very sad.i hope this scenerio will change for the benefits of the people-pls dont ignore them.

Most interesting, I was there in the 70's working on the construction of the access road, I worked for Bechtel Pacific instructing Indonesian nationals in preventive maintenance procedures on earthmoving equipment, I was at the (then) 45 mile & 55 mile camps. I was looking at the place via Google Earth and could not believe the size of Timika, all that was there back then was a dirt airstrip, they had not even started mining then, just getting the infrastructure into place
