So, as usual, we spent a fair bit of time on the Wednesday wandering round the Greenfields and thankfully at that stage the sun was shining and everything was looking at its photogenic best. I spent a number of hours in the South East corner both on the Thursday evening, when it was absolutely rammed, and also on the Saturday when I avoided all of the headline acts and had a good wander round before the hordes descended.
One thing I did this year for the first time since my very first Glastonbury in 1999 was to visit the (Silver Hayes) dance area after dark. I assumed that there would be loads of photographic opportunities here but I have to say that I was deeply unimpressed. With the exception of The Blues, which I thought was great, there were massive queues to get into the few other venues which were open after midnight and the whole place still feels completely devoid of any soul or imagination so I’m afraid my camera stayed in its bag and we bailed out again fairly quickly.
However the amount of effort that goes into making many other parts of the site a huge adult fantasy land remain pretty much unsurpassed and there is always something new and jaw dropping to discover. The huge mechanical bird which came rolling past us on the Sunday evening probably topped this year’s list of “Wow” moments but the enormous articulated polar bear in the Greenpeace field wasn’t far behind.
