Mom in Maine, if your caterpillar is full grown like this one, it was probably looking for a place to pupate, probably under loose soil or bark mulch. They overwinter in a cocoon, and need to be kept in a cold area during the winter. Then in the spring or early summer it should emerge as a beautiful sphinx moth just like this one.http://www.pbase.com/tmurray74/image/128536673

My husband just found this in our driveway...very cute...we are wondering what it eats too..my kids will be wanting to feed it and watch it turn into the moth. Thanks for the indentification. I thought I may find help here. :)

Great to find this RUNNING through the tomato patch this morning. We were harvesting and looking for tomato hornworm and found this fellow.
Glad to let it go. What does it eat?
