Banded Sunfish - Enneacanthus obesus

Oxbow NWR, Harvard, Ma.

This little fish was stranded in 1/2" of water in a little stream. After taking the picture, I moved it to deeper water, and it swam off, and was just fine.

Your little fish is not a pumpkinseed, but a Banded Sunfish (Enneacanthus obesus). Which is still common in parts of eastern MA, but considered rare outside of that region.
