Dunottar Castle Sunrise Silhouette

I sometimes feel silhouettes are a bit of a 'cop out' as with direct sunlight it becomes impossible to manage the exposure, but the ruin of the castle does have quite a striking outline, unfortunately the birds that roost here didn't want to add some interest by flying off.

I agree that silhouettes often do not work but this one does. I think the successful ingredients are the iconic outline and and your good handling of the sun. I have to disagree about the birds though. I think they would have added clutter to the image. The image is simple, distinctive and unmistakable as Dunnottar. Excellent work.

I tend to agree with your thinking on silhouettes, however this image warrants it. Wise move!!! V

that is tricky light...yet the bright spot of the sun could be set as an exposure guideline...the silhouetted ruin here is potent and fascinating, and even down a notch or two it would still work...in any case this seems a searing, vibrant moment under that stupendous sky...V

This works very well with the light shimmering on the water.

Not a cop out here, this is very atmospheric and inspirational.

I usually offer up some of my home made biscuits to the birds, they soon fly away then ,
Strange thing that , just cant work it out why ?
