A small town about 50km NE of Frankfurt. I lived here during the 70's, and travel back often to visit with close friends.

Does anyone recall a SP 4 Robert Lee Clark. He was assigned 3rd Bat 61st ADA from about Oct 1973 to about Mar 1975. He is deceased and I am trying to learn more about his time in the U. S. Army. I have his military records and they indicate that he worked with a Valcan sytem. I would just like to know more about him. Thanks to all who served and are serving.

I was point man on bravo team in Bravo Troop. The troop commander was Capt Roberts. My platoon sergeant was SFC Escalona. I left B troop the 15th day of Jan 1960 I was there 12 months after being transferred from CCA with the 36th AIB in Hq Co as S3 clerk at Schloss Kaserne. I was a dependent in Budingen as a kid, I see Marlowe Henderson and John A. Horan have posted here, I was part of that incredible DYA football team, remember coach Haines? And Ruby at the DYA. Medieval Büdingen is an ideal destination for any trip to Germany, particularly if you were stationed there any time between 1945 and 2007! Although the castle is still inhabited by a prince, one section of the castle is a hotel, offering lovely rooms and a delicious breakfast. Excellent restaurants can be found in the Altstadt: The Hexenstübchen, the Schlosscafë, the Bleffe, Zur Kron, the Wirtz Eck, and a pretty restaurant just inside the Jerusalem Gates (the Berghof is now a private residence). The Tourist Information center provides outstanding tour guides extremely knowledgeable of the city's history for about $35.00 an hour. The guides may even take visitors to the top of the Bollwerk or Witch's Tower for stunning birdseye views of the town. A quick photo op in front of the Muhltor Brucke and a climb to the top of the Wilder Stein are mandatory! I'm sorry that Büdingen was not included by the government tourist department on the official Fairy Tale Road itinerary. It should have been! It seems Büdingen holds a very special place in all our hearts!

To Carl Dunn: yes, my dad was Phillip Ryan. He was first the CO of A Battery of the 517 FA BN. Later he was the BN S'3 before we moved from Budingen to Babenhausen where he served as the S-3 of the 36th FA Group.

My name is Jerry Blodgett, I was in Buedingen in 67 & 68, incredable place to be in the Army, I didn't want to leave, I was in 3/12cav, some of my friends were Sgt Dan Bendel, Butch Beason, he left for Vietnam, Don Runkle, Jerry Terpey, Paul & Judy Woltman, Sgt Stoddard ran the mess hall, Sgt Markham, head of troop maintanance, 1st Lt Alex Alen, Joe Green, Paul & Judy lived off base & we had some great times there, anyone remember Lina, she had a guest house in old town, she put everyones picture on the wall, so many great times there, beautiful place, hope to see some of my friends on here

Rachel Horsley, I truly remember your father Norm, he was close friends with SFC Bobby McGuire the Mess Hall NCOIC for 3/61 ADA. I do remember you too during a evening of CP duty with CPT Howell and 1SG McBride of the 509th inside the barracks of 3/61 just weeks before the confrontation between 3/12 CAV and 3/61 ADA in front of the Chapel. Your father was close friend with the Red Cross Rep named Lunquist and his son, along with Danny Day and myself. I ended up marrying SFC McGuire's daughter in 1974. MSG Peters was another person that interacted with your father and also ended up at Fort Bliss. There are so many people my wife and I remember from Büdingen. Feel free to email me.

The first 100 refugees arrived at the former Armstrong Barracks on 9 Dec. It did not say how many more may live there or what the capacity will be. They will tentatively stay there for 3 months. This year Germany has taken in a million refugees instead of the 850,000 they expected.
In Hanau the old Sportsfield housing already holds 1,000 and has capacity for 1,700 total. In a lot of towns and cities the former barracks and/or housing areas are all that's available besides sports halls.

On another note, anyone remember 1SG Harris? His son Benjamin Harris just ran for mayor of Buedingen.

I was stationed at Armstrong Barracks from '71 through '73 (caught in one of the last months of the draft). Served with the 3/61 Air Defense Artillery as a crew chief on a Vulcan. Tearing around in a full tracked vehicle on the German roads is still a bit of weird experience. Would like to hear from any of the guys I was lucky enough to know.

I'm searching the father of my mom's friend. We don't know a lot about him but maybe somebody knows him.
He was called Jonny (We don't know his first name well and we're not sure about his last name, too. It's something like Owen, Ahren, Ohorn...). In 1955/56 He was stationed in Büdingen. He came from South Carolina and in summer 1956 he had to leave Germany again but we don't know where he had to move to.

MY family lived in Budingen from 1950 to 1952. My dad was an officer in the 517th field artillery battalion. As dependent housing had not yet been built, we lived in contract housing at 7 am junkergarten strasse and later in the tri-plex across the street and up a block. The time there was one of the happiest times of my life. I went to school in Gelnhausen and Hanau. The officer's club was up the hill from us and my brother and I used to play tennis on the clay court. In the summer we used to go to Fetchenheim to an indoor swimming pool. We later moved to Babenhausen when my dad became the S-3 of the 36th field artillery group...but Budingen will always have the top spots in my heart and memory.

My family and I moved to Budingen Sept 1970 when I was a senior at Frankfurt American high. My dad was Norm Rader who was in charge go the EM Club and the NCO club until 1975 when he and my mom Eva came back to the states. I got married to Gary Horsley who was also in 3/61st C Btry. I still keep in touch with other dependent a from that time. I also keep in touch with one of Gary's buddies from that time. I noticed some talked about Ted and Wanda Boss the insurance man. I talk to their son Tim who is my Facebook friend. They have both passed as have both my parents. I love talking to friends and others who have been there during time. I noticed someone mentioned Mark Hottinger. He played in a country band with my dad. He still lives in El Paso. Sgt Edwards lived in El Paso too but has passed. Ann Poe lives in El Paso but her husband has passed. Don't knife his name. Most of the older guys from my time retired and they still live in El Paso with their families but some go the men have passed.

Mark Hottinger was also in 3/61, I worked for him in Spandhalem, AFB In 6/56 ADA, (1981-84) he was the S3 ops sgt. Karin Pedraza, so sorry to hear about your husband. When we were at Ft. Bliss in early 80's one of the pediatricians we saw was Dr.Graham Pereira,such a nice man. Just chatting one day about were we'd been stationed etc. I found out he and Felix were from the same place in PR. He had lots of fun memories of both of you!
We were in Buedingen 2nd time 1976-1980, 3/61 ADA, S-3, Lt Peter Goodyear, Lt. Gutierrez, MAJ Alan Whitley, COL Supinski. I taught Headstart & Gateway to German classes at the Ed Center, before I left Helen Michaelson came on board (Chaplain Helmut Michaelson's wife). Neta Pike was Ed Ctr counselor/supervisor. Lots of fun memories. Made many good friends: Larry & Darlene Weddel- he was Supply Sgt, she ran the busy little Alterations in basement of CAV bldg across from Ed Center; Ray & Bea Harper-he was Supply she worked at YS; Mark & Brigitte Hottinger,C or D Btry, Harry & Vera Smith, D Btry?, Jerry & Veronica Seabolt, D-Btry?,she ran the little Alterations place with Darlene. Paul & Brenda Kelly, S-3,she worked at the Mess Hall, the Doporto's. First time 1973/1974 friends w Richard & Jan Chiles,Danny Scarberry & wife, Bobby Lee & Gussie Williams & more.

I am searching for my father who has been stationed in Babenhausen 1955 in the 593rd FA Bn - Battery A - 36th FA Group. There is a photo taken 1955 in Babenhausen, he is the one sitting all on the right side of the photo. The source of the photo was Bill Daniel. Hi,found this by chance good to read nice words about my late husband Felix Pedraza, we were stationed in Buedingen from Jan 79- April 82,Felix and I agreed this was the best time we had in Buedingen, meet really good friends there. Hey soldiers, I was in swingin' Boo-dingen from 76-79, C Btry 3/61st. Drove the wrecker for the motor pool and SFC Smoker. Moved to 1st platoon under SFC Scarberry and drove a track. Many happy memories of Crete, beers at Hole In The Wall and Zur Post. Shout out to pals SP4 Olson, First, Hightower, Wagner and Paul 'BFH' Wallace. Cheers from Colorado.

John Emory...Ted & Wanda were his parents. I was stationed there from Oct '72 - Dec '75 and knew them well. After two plus years at Fort Carson, I was reassigned to Fort Bliss in '78, walked into the club one Friday & there was Ted & Wanda. They had just moved back to El Paso after many years in Budingen. We got together a few more times but after I left Bliss, I lost track of them until I ran across this page a couple of years ago and found that Tim was their son.

From '82 to '92 I played banjo for Vaughn Meader who was stationed in Germany in the late 50s.
He had a Country band called The Rhein Rangers.Somebody else that became famous was also in that band.

Hi Buds from Budingen if you were there in 1968-1970 especially and all those others who had the wonderbar experience of living in that quaint little town! Frankfurt was not that far away and we'd drive in with friends and were there that day our guys landed on the MOON! I was so proud watching the televised reports all over the city that day. You'd know me by the name Diane BECKER - my husband at the time was running the post office and his name was CHET Becker. Our best friends were Bobbie and Marion Robinson. He operated the post office too - one incoming one going. We'd have some guys over to our house on the top of the mountain at the forest entrance often for cake, coffee and playing games. I remember one couple who turned us on to strawberry champagne available locally :) Chet and I had bought a English Anglia when we traveled to London and visited for the first time relatives of mine in Holland whom I never met and learned all about how they saved and hid so many Jewish families. Guess I'm a little nostalgic lately since my mom just passed in New Jersey. I was still a teen back then when we married and moved to Germany - one of the best times EVER! I was at Armstrong Kaserne in A Btry, 3/61st ADA from Jan 1972 to Oct 1974. I remember being able to see the outlines the Nazi Swatiskas left on the placards on the bldgs in the Kaserne. My first weekend there we had a stripper at the EM Club (she took it all off!!). I was TAMMS clerk in the A Btry motor pool and later became Motor Sgt after SSG Jerry Edwards rotated back to the states. Spec4 Ralph Schwarzbach took my place when I ETSd in Oct 74. Lived in Orleshausen for a while with some Sgts from the 3/12th and had a big time at Oma's! Those were great days and my only regret is not taking more pics and saving the ones I did take. Anyone remember jumping from deuce and a half to deuce and a half while in convoy? Crazy sexy in Frankfurt? If we had only had iPhones back then!!

i love getting bratwurst in the morning and krautdogs at the little stand on base armstrong barracks i was in a taxi coming from hanau and we hit a big recovery tank at night 100 mph we were close to gelnhausen and the tank was on the autobond they were supposed to leave in the day but didnt i rescue the driver she an older lady like a grandma we just hit the damn tank they kept going caused a big pileup it oct 86 send me a line if you remember thanks

Anyone out there serve with the 12th CAV, HQ Troop, Comm. Platoon, in the 1958-60 time frame? It would be fun to connect. I was a radio op in HQ Troop. Twelve on, twenty-four off. Great duty, except for those midnight alerts in the middle of January and February.

I retired in '84 and taught BTMS for two years then returned to Armstrong as the Installation Coordinator. My wife is from a town close by and we return often. Two of the messages wanted to hear from those of us who served in Budingen 1958-60. I arrived there Christmas Eve 1958 and shipped home June 1, 1960. I was in HQ Troop of the 12th Cav. and was a radio operator. I returned in 1990 shortly after the border opened and found the town and Kaserne not all that much changed. CQ's office for HQ Troop was in the same place. Believe the Kaserne is among those deactivated in recent years. It was a great 18 month tour.

HI,my name is Kitty Marsh,my Husband was stationed in Budingen from 1958 to 1960,we lived off base at 54 Bahnhoff Straste.Our oldest son Jeffrey was born in the 97th general hospital,Franfurt,Germany 53 years ago.I goggled the hospital and it has been torn down and is now and embassey.My Husband Gene was with the 12th Calvary there and worked in the message center. If any one out there remembers oor name please contact me.My Husband is deceased now as of December 2010.We had wonderful friends there and Frau Frank was our land lady and her son Hammond lived on the 2nd floor and we lived on the 3rd floor of there apartment house,a dress shop was on the first Great memories and Thanks for the wonderful pictures.

It is ironic that you were born on 25 NOV, so am I but in l952 to an Ottilie Gunther. She is in the states as I made contact with her but she is better horrible about telling me about my background like my Dad. I was adopted by an American family in l956. I have always wondered about my situation and she is not telling me. Any ideas in finding out what is going on with myself. Maybe can put our heads together and figure out something. I grew up in Buedingen and still have family there! My mother married in Aug. of 1963 on post my dad Elvis Green he was in C-Troop 3rd Platoon in 3/12th cav. We go to visit every chance we get. Love this site just found it. My biological father was also stationed in Buedingen 1954-1957 James D. Love they called him Jimmie.

Also know he must have been in budingen around the spring or summer of 1967.She also told me when he was there he was there working on the back roads of "Thiergarten strasse" she said thats were they had some of there manoeuvres.So to me it sounds like he was in a Engineer company.I also know that my Birth mother had two small children at the time i was born. I was in Budingen...'72-'74... I remember Tony Glass (not sure where he was from) and David Hopper (from the Mayodan, N.C. area) we served with the 3/61st ADA... I lived in Alendebach, on Langasse Strasse... with my wife & Son... my neighbor was Sp4 Pendergrass and his wife Cheryl, from Texas. Three or Four guys lived in a small appartment below us. Our lanlord was Dr. Hans Grebe... Sure would like to hear from any one from that era of time... God Bless!

I was a crew cheif on AH-1G 70-15994 in the early 70's , and I went back to Germany in 1980 as a Cobra Pilot to visit with Dave Englehart . He had retired ,and had a little farm outside of Budingen ,but he died sometime after that (I am not sure when). Dave was our NCOIC of the QC shop , and was the inspiration for us all to do better . I sold my old 1967 Pontiac Grand Prix to Dave when I left ,and I heard he drove it for many years there after . My good friend then was Mike Stewart (a Huey crew cheif) that later in 1980 went to flight school and flew Black Hawks at Ft. Lewis where he died in a night vision gogle accident in the late 80's. Mike , and Dave have been my inspiration all these years , and I am still flying in Iraq now for the Dept, of State as a Maintenance Test Pilot in UH-1ST's . It has been 41 years now , and I will be going home in 4 months , and I will retire in South Melbourne Beach Florida with my wife Viveca . I will always remember though the best times in Budingen Germany D Troop 3/12 cav from 1971 til 1973 ...

Was in budingen 74-76 frequentled Die Tenne more than the Hole-in-the-wall. Found this site looking for an old friend. Anyone know anything about what happened to the Hoffman family that ran the Tenne? Their children were Klaus, Ute, Susie, Silke, and Dirk.

I really get a kick hearing from these young men who were stationed in Armstrong barrecks.
All I hear is good times. I was with the 83rd. arty Charlie batry. from 60to 62 There were good times but there sure were some bad times also.Border patrol 3 months out of the year was not fun.Getting sauced in Charie bar helped.I just think it's funny how we only remember the good times and not the bad. Glad we all went home and are able to say we served. By the way, I was back ther 6TIMES (married a budingen girl)Don't really want to go back again.Thank you all for serving.

I Remember Frog Circle, was stationed there from June 1971 till December 1972 with C-battery 3rd of the 61st air defense artellery in a Chaparell unit, I drove a duece and ahalf missle cargo truck. I visited back with my wife in 2000, Man you would'nt recognize the city now. Really built up, nothing like I remembered from 1972. My captain was Capt. Scurry from Pitt, Pa. and 2nd louey Maltrich from Akron, Oh.

I was a Driver then a loader then a gunner when i left i was a tank commander of a M551 Sheriden My best memories of that place were riding the trains, PT runs in the morning thru the town, never forget the smell. Our rotatations in Graf and Hohenfelds were unforgetable. I would on the weekends I would walk downtown and window shop. Beautiful town, especially the castle. i had two sisters i lived with Christiana and Donna whaT I GOOD TIME I HAD IN BUDEGEN my son was born in Germany.

In January 1977 I hit the 3/12 Cav. HHC Medical Platoon. Loved Germany, Served under a prick named Cpt. Danial J Cleary. Whom I still pray gets stomach cancer. I can't remember many other names, except my Buddies from the Sheridan Tanks Bob Montoya and Ralph ???. I still have a painting in my home that was done by Peter Maggar in the rec center dated 6 /4 77. Took me months to talk him into selling it to me. Finally he for for $20.00. Thanks again Pete! I was a E-4 supply clerk in Alpha Troop working under Sgt Dejesus, and then Sgt Lee. I would on the weekends I would walk downtown and window shop. Beautiful town, especially the castle. Recently connected with past friends on Facebook. Some of the Desert shield/storm vets were in Vegas for 20 year reunion, sorry I missed it. I think this is a great site.

I lived in Budingen for a short time after living in Hanau for 3 years. I was in elementary school and it was such a great little town to live in. We lived across the street from the base. I was in Trp A 3/12, 1st platoon from '72 to '74. I remember Dave Lopez, he was one of my squad leaders and track commanders, - he made Ssgt. while he was there. Some of the other guys were Randy Brady, Loren Roseboom, Mike Copley, Dave Bartnes, and Sgt Matte. I had a pretty good time and learned to mountaineer while I was there.

Yep, I did share a house with 2 or 3 Cav Sgts. I can't even remember their names- Sgt Pete, Sgt. ? and a Hispanic Sgt. Too bad I did'nt take many pics. I could kick myself in the butt for that! To Don Reid that was part of the 1956 Gyro of the 3rd Armored Div. My memories are still clear on the day you all arrived in Budingen by train. I was one of about 25 leftovers from the 4th Infantry who greeted you in tattered fatigues and several 3/4 ton trucks. We were all very short timers who had been left on our own for about 10 days and we were a mess and didn't care. Your CO assembled you all on the parade ground and tried to impress you that you were 3 minutes from the nearest Russian jet base pointed out that we were the worst soldiers he'd ever seen. If I remember, you were 95 percent 18 year old's with brand new fatigues. He kept you restricted on the base for the 2 weeks and when he finally let you out, about 90% of the div. went out and got blind drunk and almost destroyed the town and Frankfurt and Munich. It made all the papers and most units were restricted again. The young guys couln't handle the strong German beer. Oh, What memories.

I lived in Budingen in 83-84,and I loved it there. I lived on the economy and our address was Seemenbach strasse 12.One of my neighbors was Shari Hawkins,she was married to Lt. Bo Hawkins,and she was a very talented water color artist. I think they were from Houston, Texas.I think of her often and she painted a very beautiful watercolor painting of Budingen and gave it to me in exchange of a sketch that I drew for her. I went back to Budingen in 2005 for a visit and was just the same as when I was there in 83-84. My landlords even let us stay in one of their apartments next door to the one we used to live in. And there was a Rose Festival going on at the castle and horse and buggy rides. And we ate Rusticano's everyday. I miss Budingen and the people.I'm so lucky that I have these memories. I hope to go back again someday! My x-husband was stationed there and his name is Jeff Phillips.

Lived in Budingen on base during 1970 to 1973. Actually, Budingen is my birthplace; I was born there in 1957. My father Sgt.G.Messerschmidt, was based there a second time. My mother was from Budingen and I had plenty of relavites around the area. Went to school in Gelnhausen and Hanau. I also delivered the Stars and Stripes there; first directly on the base and later in the housing area. Remember the Vromans and Richardsons in the housing areas. Pete Miller did you know Dave Englehardt suffered a heart attack and died in germany, believe it was 76. I remember Cpt Doyle and Cpt Ferrera. They were a couple for sure.

I was stationed with the 509th in June of 81 until it was changed to Gco. 122nd Maint sometime in 82 or 83. Then we moved to Butzbach. Where we still supported 3/61 Ada and picked up the TOW mission. I was there until 1984 when I moved to the 101st and stayed for 7 years until I retired. When in Buedingen I lived in the temp quarters on the 4th floor 2nd bldg going up the hill. Everyone called them the bowling alley. we actually had 8 bedrooms.I worked as Tech supply/ Faar/ and Chap section Chief. While in Buedingen.

Everett Spencer- I was stationed there with A Battery, 3/61st ADA from 1971 to 1974. I still have fond memories of Orleshausen and Oma's. We lived in a rent house there with some Cav sergeants for a time and drank enough for several lifetimes. Man, those were the days. I was the TAMMS clerk in A Btry motorpool and becam acting Motor Sgt. in early 1974. I have been back several times since. Once in the early 80's and it looked the same then. I understand the Kaerne is gone, for the most part. I still remmebr the swatiskas one could se the outline of on the HQ bldg. What a history the place had!!

I was stationed at Budigen from 1/56 to 7/57. I was a pilot in the 593rd FA Bat. My wife and I lived in post housing with our 1 yr. old daughter. I knew Ben Carson and Gene Korpal and Dale Grosshart. Gene Korpal died several years ago. He was a 2 or 3 star Gen Off at Ft. Sill. You can look him up on Google. Bruce Briggs was another pilot in our flight section as well as Tom Wallace. Carl Boat is another. I will keep reading the posts and something may jolt my memory. Its been a long time. We have been back to Budigen 2 times over the years. We loved it and have great memories.

Great pictures! Lived in G-Town from 77-79. Went to Gelnhausen Elementary 8th grade 77' and Hanau high School 78-79. Did everything possible at the DYA. Would love to hear from anyone that was there during that time.

I am a member of the American Legion and I went thru the records of members in this county. I'm sorry to say your father is not in any records That I went thru. Was in Buedingen from Jan 70 til we moved to Babenhausen early in 71. Was Battery Commander then in 5th Corps at Babenhausen. Great memories and a beautiful area. My son was born in Frankfurt shortly before I left for my second tour in Vietnam. I'd like to go back and visit someday.

wow this is great. I grew up in orleshausen, my husband was a medic at armstrong from 1976 to 1979, we got married in Buedingen and than came back to his hometown portland oregon, I tried to see if any names sounded familiar, but couldn't find any. My husbands name is jerry labes and Im sabine nazarenus now labes. my aunt owned several apt. houses in orleshausen and the local watering hole where we all hang out zur frischen quelle was the name of her restuarant and everybody called her sanne kaet. does anyone remember,looking at this site brought back lots of good memories, than you.

I was stationed at Armstrong Kaserne from 2003 to 2006. Deployed with HHT 1/1 CAV to Baghdad, stayed there for 15 months, returned to a great welcome from everyone in Budingen. Also served in Commanche and Apache Troop.

My Mother Hildegard Strauss nee Stern born in Budingen on March 7, 1910. She just celebrated her 100th birthday in Eugene, Oregon. She continues to correspond with Irene Brunger. You can read her story in the Budingen newspaper. Mother left Germany in November 1936. Her father had a Butcher Store. She recently sang the 3 verses of "Am Wildenstein" without a flaw. The song was song in her gym group and was composed in the late 1800's. What a memory. A painting of the castle hangs in our home.

I was stationed with D Trp 3/12 Cav in Budingen (1975-78). I worked at the airfield and got to see a lot of Germany. Looking for Danny Newman, Steve Gorely, Ziggy Ziegfried, Charlie Tucker and many more. We use to walk from the Kaserne to the Airfield and stop by ol number "9" on the way to work. 1977 was one of the best years for Rhein Wine.

I went to Budigen in March 1951 with the 517th Armd FA Bn.
While the barracks were being worked on we lived in
Squad tents on the parade ground.
Budigen was a beautiful town and my favorite place of all
I was stationed.
No MPs so the E6s pulled courtesy patrol on weekends.
The NCO Club was in the center of downtown.
The relationship between the soldiers and the townspeople
were are very good.

When I was in Budingen, between 1961/1963, I was at D Troop, 3/12 Calv. The Troop Commander was, Capt. Lutz. My platoon sergeant was Sgt. John W. Ross, there also were, Sgt. Wilson, Sgt. Lewis (Recruiter) and I will like to get in touch with my real buddy, John Luddle from Oregon USA or Jose L Ortiz, from Puerto Rico. I lived in Budingen from 1969-1972. My father 1Sgt Nile Pond was stationed there in the 3/12 Cav I believe. I attended Gelnhausen American Elementary School and remember certain things like eating hot school lunch at the NCO Club and listening to songs like "War," "Proud Mary" etc., that the GI's played on the juke box. I also remember other things like when the neighbor's kid was banned from the Kaserne by the post commander because his hair was too long. Finally, I also remember Frau Rathay...one of my most memorable teachers who not only taught us brats German but about Germany.

Not sure if you remember me but I'm Bobby Still and I also was in the 83rd in the 66-68 period in FDC with Rudy Zamora, Jim Hudson, David Jaramillo and Dave Grasmick who I see has posted some comments. Like others, seeing the names and comments on this site brings back a lot of good memories and some not so good as when I like Dave slept in the snow and when I woke up I could see the wild boar's tracks around my sleeping bag. After that I started sleeping on top of the PC. Bob, You mentioned Herb Chinn who was a good friend of Rudy. If you correspond with Herb please ask him if he has heard from Rudy. It's great seeing the names and notes from the 66-68 guys of the 83rd so I will definitely be checking this site again. Many thanks to Timothy for making this available to us.

She was raised in Budingen, GE, had a German mom and American dad, and spoke fluent German and English (no german accent); her American dad I believe lived in Texas; her age would now be around 42 to 44 years old now; she lived with her German Grandmother and younger brother in Budingen near that big rock formation (cannot remember its name?); she did attend the American Univerity of Maryland in Munich, GE around 1983 to 1986 time frame.

She was like a little sister to me in the early 1980's (1981 to 1984) and I would like to recontact her to see how she is doing in life. So if anyone can get me in contact with her it would be greatly appreciated.

It was always off limits to the military guys but we always went anyways. We would also make the trip to the "Blue Thunder" club and had such a great time every time we went. I don't remember what city it was in.

I was stationed in Budingen for only two months in the summer of "63". As a member of the 79th Engineers from Pirmasens, Germany, we were sent there to build a tank training area outside of town. During September some of us, but not all, were sent to Morocco to dismantle three Air Bases. Had a chance to go back and visit there in May of 2008. Our German/American friends (who were also visiting their native country tho with their family and friends) were supposed to meet us at the Bahnhof in Budingen but we missed the train connection in Fulda and were two hours late. They searched the local hotels and we were not registered in them so they went back to a neighboring town and we went on to Frankfurt! We managed to get in touch with our friends the following day and told them what had happened. While waiting for us to arrive they visited the town and remarked "what a beautiful town"! Over the years I have traveled to several countries and Budingen remains one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. I celebrated my 20th birthday there. What great memories I have of this town.

I was with 1/1 CAV 93-96, great Unit, great German city. Went back last year (Christmas 2008)and it is completely boarded up, abandoned... very depressing. Even the old SCO quarters and O'Club are overgrown... Hanau, Wolfgang, Fliegerhorst all the same... The Wolfgang PX complex remided me of Planet of the Apes, knee high weeds in the parking lot, an occassional shopping cart, AAFES sign hanging off the PX...

I was stationed in swingin Budingen from 81-92. I was in B 3/61 ADA 1st platoon. 2 things back then had broke my heart. First was when we switched to 3/5 ADA and the second was when we deactivated. Our Moral was always at an all time high. I remember what seemed like every New Years eve, 3/12 Cav and 3/61 ADA would end up having shouting matches across the little street that seperated our barracks. We were stationed in Budingen in the early 80's... my Dad was commander and we lived in a wonderful house near Schillerstrasse or Machensenstrasse. I have spent hours trying to find a picture of our white house for my children to see... it's a stretch but if anyone remembers the commanders house and has a picture, I would just love to have it. Thank you for bringing back memories of a place very dear to my heart. I was stationed her back in the early 80s with the 3/12 under Col Thurman. One hell of a guy, I think we would have followed that old soldier to storm hell itself. Went back once, in the late 90s, the city was beautiful still, but there were few troops left, it was sort of sad. I would like to take my wife and kids back here sometime. Does anyone remember the boars head they had hanging on a wall in town?

Don Combs: I was stationed in Budingen from 1972 - 75, D Btry 3/61 ADA. I initially lived in Rinderbugen but when the bottom fell out of the dollar in 1973, moved into quarters. I also worked in the NCO Club as a MA and night manager. Steve Aker mentioned Dieter the bar tender at the O club ... Dieter came to the NCO club in 1974 and worked with me... he was a great guy. My three years and three months in Budingen was a wonderful experience. I served with great folks and had a number of great German friends...

I was stationed there from May 1987 thru May 1990 - for some of the oldtimers that might seem like yesterday. I lived on the Marktplatz and enjoyed the heck out of the Scholssmuhle, the schwimmbad, Rusticana's pizza, and many of the bars. One thing that was very interesting was the fact that our unit (3/61 ADA) had so many homesteading soldiers who preferred Budingen to stateside duty. And with good reason. The champion was SFC Vinclov - at the time the FAAR Platoon Sergeant - who apparently spent about ten years in the unit prior to my arrrival, remained there the three years I served, and was a basketball coach in the local community. Great guy. Not a week goes by that I don't think about "Altstadt Buedingen" - not to mention Hohenfels, Wildflecken, Graff, and Todendorf. It was certainly interesting to be there as the communist block collapsed and we continued our drawdown from West Germany. I feel sory for the soldiers today who don't get to serve in such a wonderful place. Nice site and sorry for rambling.

Got extended and went to Erlangen Germany and returned to USA in February 1962. Not many days go by I dont think about the time in Budingen. Made a lot of friends. I am so glad I found the web site.

I started my Army Career at Armstrong Barracks 1974 to early 1976.
My Unit was D Troop 3/12 Cav at BAAF. This was a Great Unit with Great pepole indeed)
I served as PFC in Aircraft Maintenance and as a SP4/SP5 Crewchief in the Gun Platoon on AH-1 and UH-1. I remember SP6 Englehart, CPT Peterson, CW2 Lilly, SFC Workman, CPT Dempsey, SP6 Ronyack. I finished my Army career as the CSM 101st Aviation Brigade at Fort Campbell. Appreciate your site, pictures and the many comments made by everyone.

What a place and time to grow up away from home but not alone with wounderful memories and friends. I was stationed at Armstrong Barracks from 1976 - 1983 with C Trp 3/12. Arived as a 18 year old out of boot camp and left there married to a resident of Budigen. What a place and time to grow up away from home but alone with wounderful memories and friends. My first Tank Commander, which I will never forget, turned out to be the CSM of the Army, CSM McKinney. I lived in Budigen as a dependent from 66-67.Then we were transferred to Bad Nauheim in the middle of 67-68. My dad was a 1st Sgt, but I can't remember with what company.I'll have to ask him. His name is Retired 1st Sgt Donald R Potts. The AYA was above the snack bar. We played our AYA softball games on the parade field against other AYA's.
I remember a group of us kids would walk through town to get to the swimming pool. Some of the kids I remember were Paige Fuller, Shirlene Moon, Conrad and Randy LaBang, Randy and Corky Willier,Deena,Tina and Steve Jarrett & Eddy Maldonado.

I grew up near Buedingen, graduated from the local high school, the “Gymnasium” that Tim and his sister attended. I went back from ‘76-80, by then married to a C-Btry 3/61 ADA sergeant. I was a “Headstart to German” and “Gateway to German” instructor at the Armstrong Bks Ed Center from ’78-80.
The last day of “Headstart” class would be a daylong field trip. I remember many field trips escorting my “students” downtown : They had to practice their new language skills at the “Kaufhaus Joh” and demonstrate proficiency reading the train schedules at the “Bahnhof.” Then it was time for lunch at the “Huehnerstall” restaurant, to demonstrate proficiency in language and foreign currency. We combined walking off the Schnitzel lunches with an afternoon of history lessons : The manager of the Buedingen tourist office graciously let us sign out the key to the big corner tower on the hill, the “Hexenturm” (witches tower) was closely behind it. We had to duck and walk through a short damp & cold passage to get inside the Hexenturm. Quite eerie imagining what it was like as prisoners –who could not exit through the tunnel like we did! A tour of the “Schloss” concluded the day downtown.
I hope this introduction gave my ”students” the confidence to keep exploring, and enjoy Buedingen, as well as the rest of Germany and Europe. I have many fond memories of the school and the town, the “students” and the Ed Center staff, especially Martha Carden and Neta (Pike) Nesjak. Two supervisors and very classy ladies. Inge

Zum Ankers is still there,the best food I ever had in Budi! I loved the time spent met some wonderfel guys ,still talk to some of them, some have pass on which is sad. I would love to go back there some day just to see the change.I remember the mik-mak gast haus and also the hole in the wall as we called it, do you remember. My name is Walt Myer and I was in A/3/12 from Feb. of '70 to Aug. of '71. I was a loader on M551's for a while and then moved over to driving M114's. The M551's were brand new when I arrived and by the time I left, 2 out of the 3 in our platoon had been cannabilized just to keep 1 running. Also pulled guard duty at the Fulda Gap. I was the German librarian at Armstrong Barracks from 1951 to 1954. The 517th Armd FA Bn had just moved there from Wetzlar after construction work was completed on the damaged buildings during WWII. In fact, I moved the library to the Special Services Country Club location from one small room over the mess hall. I still have the newspaper clipping from 1951 “8th Regiment Gets New Library”. In reading all of the comments, I may be the only person dating back to the early 50’s. There were only a few German young ladies working at Armstrong in those days and it was quite an adventure for a 20 year old to be surrounded by hundred of GI’s. The library was like a meeting place for many GI’s who had no place to go. I still remember many of the wonderful people I met during those years. I may not remember their names, but I do remember their faces and I have many photos from those days.

I remember all the Service Club ladies and Sgt. Jennings who was in charge of the Bowling alley and Movie Theater. He let me sneak into the theater to watch all those wonderful American movies. One of my regular visitors at the library was Chaplain Charles L. Burgreen who wrote the Chaplain’s Corner. He became my mentor and good friend. I have a signed letter of recommendation dated 1952 from Lt. Col. William R. Bond; Commanding 2nd BN, 8th Infantry Regiment. I guess I always did well passing all the IG inspections! I remember many of the drivers who drove me to Gelnhausen or Hanau to pick up books and magazines. It was very exciting for a German national in those days to get those special privileges. However, even the covered jeeps were really cold in the winter months.

Timothy, your photos of this romantic town are absolutely wonderful. I translated some of the Büdingen history into a small booklet for the Service Club patrons who were interested. I have wonderful memories of Büdingen and the people. I lived on Düdelsheimer Strasse 3 until the “Gut Stub” opened there and my quite room became too noisy. I last visited Büdingen and the Armstrong Barracks Library in 1995. It was really fun to meet the librarian at that time and sit behind the desk.

Does anyone know how to contact Kameron Brown?

She was raised in Budingen, GE, had a German mom and American dad, and spoke fluent German and English (no german accent); her American dad I believe lived in Texas; her age would now be around 42 to 44 years old now; she lived with her German Grandmother and younger brother in Budingen near that big rock formation (cannot remember its name?); she did attend the American Univerity of Maryland in Munich, GE around 1983 to 1986 time frame.

She was like a little sister to me in the early 1980's (1981 to 1984) and I would like to recontact her to see how she is doing in life. So if anyone can get me in contact with her it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Mike Underwood here. Was stationed at Armstrong Bks from 88-92. Went thru 3-12 Cav, 4/7 Cav and finally 1-1 Cav. Loved Budingen area. We always ran to the little town on the backside of the kasern every morning for PT. CSM Sneed and LTC Tucker where great leaders during Desert Shield and Storm. Even as we had many deployments in the Cav, time seemed to fly by. If you were not in the field, then we were castle hopping. Always remember walking downtown on Sunday mornings because it was nice and quiet and always fun to window shop. Tks for the memories of a great place to be stationed.

I was stationed in Budingen at the Health Clinic from 91-94. It was a great assignment. My ex and I talked about taking our kids when they got older because the both were born at the local Krakenhouse. I miss the beutiful mornings that Budingen provided. I was a little sad to hear that it has closed and that there is noway that you can get on base. Thanks the pictures are nice if there are any of the base that would make a wonderful sight even better. But once again thanks for the memories.

I was part of the gyroscope of 3rd Armored Division from Fort Knox in 1956, served as helicopter and fixed wing pilot with 83rd Reconnaisance Battalion at Budingen, living with my wife and two children in on base apartment. Returned to U.S. in Dec. 1957. Left active duty but remained in active reserve for 6 years in Charlotte, NC. Summer camp at Fort Jackson, SC. Have lived in Charlotte since Jan. 1958. I was so excited when I found the comments about Frau Rathay, who was my German teacher in Gelenhausen Elementary School. Do you remember the poem she taught us? "Es regnet, Gott segnet, die erde wirt nass. Und wenn es genuch geregnet hat dan hort es wieder auf". I am sure the spelling is wrong but can hear and see her still doing that poem. I was there from around 1962 to 1965. Looking at the picture of the school now it looks so small. Sure seemed big back then. We were stationed in Budingen, lived on base for a couple of years and then when dad went to Vietnam we moved onto the "economy" for another year. These pictures certainly bring back fond memories.

I was married to George Anderson in October 1969 - he was 2/83rd FDC (fire diretion control// I think?) Buedingen memories are very special ones. We lived "on the economy" in a tiny upstairs apt. owned by the then chauffeur for the Prince of Buedingen - 9 Bismarckstrasse - I'll never forget it. George died very young from a brain tumor - age 38.

This is for Jim Arnold. Do you remember a couple of PFC's named Harley (a sharp soldier) and Pieper (a cook) all from Easy Co. If you remember the whole Regiment went on live fire exercises to two training areas at Wildflicken, on the North Sea and Grafenwhor on the Check border. At Grafenwhor we were stationed with German troops that would march and sing and put on a show for us every night as they marched off into the mountains to their border patrol posts. It was beautiful but also scary as WWII ended only ten years before.

I was with D Troop 3/12 cav in November 1970 , and I was a crew cheif out at the air feild working on a UH-1B # 596 . My platoon Sgt , was Spec6 Bob Guthrie . I remember though the most ( Sp6 Dave Englehart ) . He taught me more in one year, than I have learned in the past 39 years in this business . I went to flight school in 1976 , and I am still flying AH-1F's in Pakistan 38 years later . I was raised by the old generation of Army Aviation , and I thank God every day for people like Dave Englehart .

I was stationed in Budingen, with the 509th Ord Det, from 1972 until 1974, at that time we maintained the Vulcan and Chaparral systems. Revisited Budingen 2006 for a short stop while on vacation in Europe. The town had not changed a lot but access to a lot of places we used to go were closed off. Had a great time walking through the town.

Hey Guest you are right. When I was in Budigen it was E Co 8th Inf Regt. I had to look on some old letters that my girlfriend (now my wife) had kept. In July of 1955 the Army was rotating the 1st Division home and I, as a short timer was transferred to Schweinfurt to help fill out the Division. That was where I was in I Co. 16th inf Regt.
Their was a big celebration in New York harbor with fire boats, Secretary of the Army and a lot of noise welcoming the 1st Division home. I first got to Germany as a member of a BUDDY PLATOON which was an experimental thing by the Army at that time. My platoon had taken Basic at Ft. Jackson together, went over seas together and took over a platoon in E Co. together. I don't remember the particular basketball player you are talking about but I do remember there was a guy in my Regiment who had played for one of the Eastern colleges. I don't recall his name. When the trucks dropped my platoon off in Budigen, the guys we were replacing got on those same trucks and rotated home. In later years it turned out that son of one of the guys we replaced married my daughter. How did you know that I was mistaken about the unit I served with?

I was stationed there in 1995 & 56 with the F Co., 2nd Bat, 8th Inf. Reg., of 4th Div. and also with the gyroed 3rd Armed that arrived about June '55. I went back in 2002 and of course couldn't recognize the town which had doubled in size. I tried to find the old Florida bar that Bob B. talked about but no luck. If I remember the 593rd Field Artillery was always failing their field tests with their 155's and their CO's were always being replaced. I was the company mailman for about a year and our CO was Lt. Psihas

As an enlisted man's wife, Budingen was a great experience for me. I loved that beautiful town and the countryside. Thanksgiving I went to the commissary and measured the turkeys to see if one would fit in the tiny oven in our little apartment. Then, we invited the guys in my husband's section to eat with us. I learned to cook during that tour and my husband's friends were great sports who encouraged me. (I haven't improved much, guys!) Thanks to all the guys at Gelnhausen who helped carry my heavy laundry bags. My friends and I used to sit up almost all night when the guys were in Graf.

Great memories of Budingen on these pages, thanks to everyone for the postings. I was stationed there from 6-66 to 6-68. C Battery 2nd Battalion 83rd Artillery "Fire Direction Control". It's funny how I can only remember the good times now. Even waking up with two feet of snow covering my sleeping bag seems like a good memory now. Omah's guest House still brings back the best memories along with Berchtesgaden, the Autobahn and the REAL Octoberfest.

I was sitting thinking about the days when i lived at 16 Vorstadt in Budingen with my now ex-husband and my boy that i had while I was there. My son was born in 1980 in Frankfurt. We rented the 2nd floor of Oma and Opa's home and they were wonderful people and always watched out for me and my son while my hubby was away in the field. I absolutely love this place. I have many wonderful memories of being there. There used to be a little ice cream parlor right under us with the best homemade ice cream. All this pics on this site bring back great memories. My name is Terry Hutcheson. I was stationed there in 71-72. My old unit was the 509th Ordnance Detachment. I was a 27F and worked on the Chapparal/Vulcan System and was a Spec-5. I actually lived off post in Orleshausen. I left in November of 1972 when my wife had stillborn baby at the 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt. That was and continues to be a sad chapter in my life. Timothy, Thanks for establishing this great website. The photos are excellent, and congratulations on your "ancestry search" being productive in Budingen. The best aspect, though is this "comment" capability that allows all sorts of folks with Budingen "connections" to connect with one another.
Like many of the commenters, I was in the Army stationed in Budingen. I was there from early 1968 until late 1969, in 3/12 Cav. I, too, have lots of good memories of my time there. During that time back in the States life was tense. There were major riots going on in many cities, there was lots of tension and discontent over the Vietnam War, etc. But we were ensconced in a pleasant little German town with good food and good "bier"! Sure, we had to maintain our training readiness, which involved frequent trips off to Hohenfels, Wildflecken, and Grafenwoehr training areas, and we always had to be ready to beat back the Soviet hordes. But, all in all, life in Budingen was pretty nice!
Steve Akers, in a comment below, mentioned "Honey" the doyenne of the Officers' Club; she, along with Deiter the bartender, were the "constants" for the officer community in Budingen. Officers would come and go, even club managers would come and go, but Honey and Deiter were always there. One of my most distinct memories involved Honey (her name was actually Johanna Klapwik - I suppose "Honey" was an Americanization of "Hanna"). The Apollo 11 Moon landing occurred, of course, in 1969. On the day of the landing (actually the evening and night in Budingen), many of us were watching the NASA broadcast on a TV in the club. The process of exiting the lander and actually setting foot on the Moon hadn't occurred by the time it was necessary to close the club, so Honey asked whoever wanted to continue watching to come to her home to do so. So there we were, about 10 to 15 of us crowded into Honey's apartment at about 3 a.m., watching that grainy, black-and-white video of Neil Armstrong jumping down onto the Moon's surface. It was wonderful of Honey to open her home so we could experience that event.
I made a lot of friends and good acquaintences during that year-an-a-half - Joe Morgan, Hubert "Wags" Wagstaff, Bill Iovene, Don Cake, Kenton "T" Turner, and others. We all knew Monty Meigs not when he was CG of US Army Europe, but when he was just CPT Meigs in C Troop. And who could forget the Squadron Commander then, LTC Lloyd J. Brown. Colonel Brown made a point of being seen as a larger-than-life Cavalryman.
I notice in one of the comments that "Die Bleffe" is still in operation; makes sense, 40 years ago it had the best food in Budingen (tho the bratwurst stand just outside the kaserne was a close second!).

Served there '93-'96... Miss the Christmas tree ceremonies with the Princess. Dr. Uhl sent us socks in Yugoslavia.

I took my kids (born in Hanau) there this past X-Mas... all closed down, weeds in the motor pool, very depressing.

Budingen is a great place, we will miss it very much.

My name is Jeff Brick, I was a Spc 4 and was stationed in Budingen a short time from Apr 93 - Jan 95. I was in C Trp, 1/1 Cav was a Bradley Mechanic and drove the mainenance M113A3. I was just hoping to maybe find some of guys I served with. Until finding this web page on Google, I didn't even know the unit was deactivated. There are times I wish I never left the military and many more times I'm glad I did, but I'll never miss those I served with.

Does anyone remember our German teacher at Gelnhausen School? Frau Rathay.

She just died about a year ago. She lived to be 104.

A person from Gelnhausen Ilse Rathay is celebrating her 100th birthday today. Her interesting life is worthy of a book, in which dramatic scenes would not be missing. One of the greatest moments was the fact that she had an important part in the decision, just days before the end of the war, that Aufenau would not be destroyed. [note: a village northeast of Frankfurt]

Ilse Rathay is from Silesia. Yesterday she said that it was purely coincidental that she was born in Breslau. [note: currently Wroclaw in Poland] Actually her family, one of table makers, lived in Wüstengiersdorf in Waldenburg County. Before the war the area had a population of right around 7000.

In 1929 Ilse Rathay moved with her husband to the United States. Ten years later, however, the by now family of four moved back to Silesia. The centenarian was forced to flee involuntarily and finally at the beginning of 1945. Two years before, her husband died as a result of a heart attack. With her sister and children she was able to obtain space on a hospital train. It was rerouted when the trackage was destroyed by the Russians. Eventually the train arrived in Bad Tölz by way of Czechoslovakia.

While her sister went to Westphalia, Ilse Rathay found refuge with her brother-in-law, who ran a cheese making factory in Aufenau. The Rathays lived in the Villa Pomona, the present-day women's home.

This turned out to be lucky for the residents of Aufenau.

A few days before the end of the war, US soldiers entering Aufenau noted, as in many other places, white bedsheets hung out of windows, and the worst seemed over with. Then Aufenau held its breath.

Ilse Rathay's daughter recalls: "From the direction of the school the first vehicle of the Americans was fired upon." Now it was feared that Aufenau would be destroyed.

However, two clergymen and the mayor were able to dissuade the US soldiers from this action, thanks to Ilse Rathay, who with her command of English was able to calm down the threatening situation.

The United States played a further role in the life of the centenarian, who moved to Gelnhausen in 1952. Her daughter married an American and returned to the US, the land of her birth. And Ilse Rathay was employed by the US Army, first as a secretary, and then as a German teacher in Hanau-Wolfgang and later at the American school in Gelnhausen. She so enjoyed teaching that she continued to do so well after reaching the age of retirement.

Ilse Rathay is cosmopolitan, people from all over the world visited her. "Understanding among peoples" is a leading concept for the centenarian, a concept which filled her life. She travelled often, enjoyed visiting her daughter who, as a result of her husband's occupation lived for many years in the Middle East. Lebanon, Syria and Yemen are countries which Ilse Rathay got to know. And people from all over are here as a result of her day of honor.

For example, the little "sister" who is 98. A grandson has come up from the Dominican Republid as a surprise visit; Ilse Rathay can today for the first time see her newest great-granddaughter. Camila is 4 months old. Ilse Rathay will enjoy a good time at the County Retirement Home, since her family is celebrating their "source". She will certainly be strong enough to celebrate, as her daughter knows. Yesterday a delegation from the VdK-Regional Group [note: not sure what the abbreviation VdK means] came by to congratulate her. Ilse Rathay was immensely happy because of the best wishes from the chairperson Katharina Koch and from Reiner Heyer.

I was stationed in Budingen 1955-56 (593rd Fld Art Bn). Soon after arrival Don & I were selected to serve TDY as Special Policemen. About 53 years have since past, but I still have fond memories of those midnight town patrols to the "Florida Bar" (or other such Bierstubes) to quell a fight. With jeep brakes a-sqeek'n, young knees a-knock'n and our snow-white caps'n laces a-glisten'n, we'd throw open the bar door only to find the bottles still a-spin'n, GI's propped asunder and the fraulein's a-say'n "Was ist los? Hier allest ist gut...kein problem! Wollen Sie ein Bier trinken?". I revisited Budingen in '06 to show my wife this now larger but still very charming "Altstadt mit Schloss". Hey Don, you out there somewhere?

The buildings at the Kaserne are still up. Currently the town of Büdingen is trying to decide what the best use of the buildings is. Some of the bars that were active in the late 60's thru the 80's are still there however ownership has changed and of course clientele has changed. Ghästatte Zue Eisenbahn located at Frog Circle is no longer there. Kaufhaus Jöh expanded and now occupies the entire corner block. The town itself has had a facelift. Merchants have updated their signs and window displays reflecting a current contemporary feel. Büdingen is still a popular weekend stop for the surrounding towns people to shop and sightsee. As with Büdingen towns like Lieblos (Gelnhausen) have leaped into the consumer shopping craze. New mega store brands are located there and Western influences in store layout and design is evident. I was stationed in Büdingen with several tours from 1970-1982 as an E-3 thru E-8. I retired in 1989 at Ft Bragg, NC as an E-9 and return to Büdingen every other year to visit friends. Oct 2009 is my next trip. Hopefully this brings you up to date.....Bernie

Even if the Barracks in Budingen are not torn down, you will not be able to access them, they will be fenced off and closed up.

I was there at the same time, as a platoon leader and XO of C Battery & then later to Battalion as assistant S1 & assistant S3. I remember the O-club, Hunny, Deiter the bar tender, and of course Ted and Wanda. As I was reading through some other comments, I noted you are their son. After a tour at Fort Carson, I went back to Ft. Bliss & used to see them at the O-club. I now live in Michigan & recently retired from General Motors. I think of Buedingen often & would like to make a trip back in the not too distant future.

Stationed in budingen,2\83,C company,66-68.Remember the movie was 35 cents,seen all them Clint Eastwood westerns.Good ,bad and ugly,few dollars more.Also the hot dog stands with Germany's running it.Loved that hard bread.also could have the best pizza delieved for 85 cents.I guess the base is closed,but I think anyone who was stationed there should be able to go on tours of the base,even if it was just a few times a year.Its only right since we spent part of our life there.thank you for each one of you writing down your thought's.I still have dreams that I have to go back in the service and I go right back to Budingen.not a bad tour! I was stationed in Budingen from 1998 -2000, In Bravo Troop, Mortar Platoon. Definately some of the best times of my life. A friend just emailed me and told me it closed down last year, so I was googling Budingen and looking at Google Earth and reminiscing about the good old days. I went and deployed to Bosnia 2 days after I got there. Anyways thanks for the pictures they were a great trip down memory lane. All my photos from those years got thrown away in box on accident.

Hi, I am Steve Melton. I was stationed in Budigen from Nov. 1976 to Feb. 1979 in HHT 3/12 Calvary. One of the lasting memories was the circle downtown with the frog in it. We always gave directions by saying go to the Frog Circle then go from there. I remember 3 places called Charlie's. One was out of town going toward Gelnhausen. I was Stationed in Armstrong Barracks from 2004 to 2006(C Trp 1/1 Cav 4th Platoon). I went back in march 2008 and everything is changed since I left. The post which closed down in 07 seemed so empty. they opened up a Burger King across from the Esso Station and there is a new Gym going down towards lock 69. these improvements after we left..... also, I went there on a Sunday and saw more life than before.

Great pictures Tim. I was stationed there 85'to 86' with HQ troop 3/12 Cav. Really miss the town and the people. I plan on going back one day with the wife and kids. I remember spending many days exploring the town and nights at a local tavern on the main street towards the old gate entrance.Best time of my long career. Stationed there from 87-90 and they were the best years of my life. "There are places I remember all my life...some are gone and some remain" Lived in the Marktplatz saw all the fests. From bleary nights at the mysterious Schlossmuhle to strolls to Rusticana's pizzeria, to lazy summers on the Schloss' grounds. Maybe I was too young to appreciate it fully but even at the time it was a magical time in a magical place. Wonderful folks,a comment wouldn't do justice to Anne and her friends, Waltraud and many others. Life moved on but it is awfully nice to look back. Thanks for the memories und Vielen Danke Buedingen! Budingen will always have a special place in my heart, I was there almost 4 years, got there at 18 years old, and left at 22 years old. So, Budingen took me from a young man as a Private to a SGT E-5. I really miss some of my German friends and Army buddies too.

For those looking to visit Budingen, the easiest maps can be found on Google maps or Mapblast. The roads have been re-done significantly over the past 20 years, being straightened out (rememmber all the switch-backs on the uphill road heading to Gelnhausen?) and by-passes put in place, particularly around Lieblos. The sad news is that you cannot visit Armstrong Barracks- after over 60 years of US Army use, it closed as an American facility in August of 2007, and was handed back to the German government. The Cav unit stationed there moved out piecemeal over 2007, and the final ceremony as last fall. I don't know what the plans are for the site, but many other similar sites have been turned into government/public housing by the German government. The smaller, dispersed posts that used to house 3rd Armored Division units have been closed one by one, and the remaining units consolidated into the larger posts in and around Frankfurt and the Air Force bases to the south and west. If you're looking for a nice place to stay, most of the Gasthauses are good (Saline, Bleffe, etc) and the Prince's castle within the old city has been converted to a hotel. The "castle down the road" was Ronnenburg, and it operates as a restaurant specializing in venison. The restaurant is actually in the great hall, with a tremendous view across the valley.

I use to ride that Bus to watch the kids once in a while.Got the day off and rode back in the evening.Volintered every chance I got.Does anyone know about the Castle down the road 3or4 miles.I took a taxis down there,off the road about 1/4 mile.No one was around ,but it was neat. Budingen 66-68

My family was stationed at Armstrong Barracks, Budingen 1962 - 1966. I went to the elementary school in Gelnhausen 1st - 5th grade. Looking to go back in June 2008 and see what is left. Any road directions to this place would be great, including Armstrong. We lived in housing behind Armstong Barracks, old dirt road where a shepherd would talk his sheep daily and there was an apple orchard not far with a wheat field behind the housing where we lived, sand box and play ground. We lived "up hill" and would have "wars" with those in the housing "down hill." Anyone out there remember? ANy directions to get there? (This would be Budingen.)

What beautiful pictures Timothy. I am a friend of your brother's. I lived in Budingen from 1970 through 1974 and graduated from Frankfurt American High in 1971. Hung out with Jeanne Porter, Marie Ciccuzza who I still keep in touch with. We have written each other before, remember. Are you going back to Budingen soon? I can't wait to go again. To me, just hanging out in the town and shopping and eating would be fun. Forget Frankfurt, Budingen is someplace that you would think heaven would look like. My dad ran the NCO/EM Club and started the Pizza Parlor on base which was the old EM Club. Most know him, Sgt. Norman Rader. He and my mom Eva were very involved in the Legion and 40/8. Many good friends who also got stationed in El Paso and retired there after leaving Budingen. If most of you are looking for long lost friends from Budingen, they probably are in El Paso. I was stationed there as a young CW2 flying for D troop 3/12th Cav from 66-68, married the daughter of the owner of the best Restruant in town and have maintained a residence there since 1974 as a base for our continued travel around the world. It was a great place and still is. Any one who comes back, ask for George & Gitti at the Gasthaus BLEFFE. If we are in town we can reminisce.

HI,I WORKED OVER THERE IN BUEDINGEN FOR THE 1/1 CAV, IN THEIR HEALTHCLINIC FROM 2006-2007, WHILE MY HUSBAND WAS DEPLOYED IN IRAQ.IT FELT LIKE A OVERSIZED FAMILY BEING THERE ON BASE AND ECSPECIALLY THE PEOPLE I WORKED WITH IN THE CLINIC. We were in Budingen in December and you could not get on the post. I went to the main gate (which is now across from where the senior officers lived) and was told no one could go on to the property. In fact thre were signs posted-no pictures!

If you have a chance, go back for a visit. Budingen is still beautiful and it always brings back so many memories. (2/83 1968-1970)

Budingen 66-68 unlikely you can get on post but who knows it may be open for anyone if its been converted to appartments or something? May need to ask the city officials to get access to it, find someone that speaks English to help you, who knows?

I lived in Budingen from 1993-2000 Dont make your plans to stay here in a hotel because there is not that much to see nor happening in this small town after 6pm. My parents still live there and I go visit. The only thing that keeps the city alive are those drunk military guys :P Stay in Frankfurt and take a train to budingen early in the morning and by night you'll be done.

If you're going to Germany, buy a train pass it is the only way to travel. Also DO NOT stay in the big towns stay in small town and at the local guesthouse. I've been back to Budingen 7 times since 1961 last time was 2000.

Budingen is no where near Baumholder just so you know, I have been stationed in both places while in the rmy. Sorry really no suggestions on the travel part.

Is there any tips on travel there? How to make it more affordable? Ever heard of people renting rooms in their homes, etc? Or something like that? My fiance and I were talking about going in August...and so far we're finding it to be about 2100.00 each for just one week!

I'm trying to figure out if this is where i lived when I was 5 in 1982 or so. I have a mug that says Budingen...my mom seems to forget everything! there would have been an army base since thats why we were there. I recall it not being terribly far from Baumholder since we took a bus there. I don't recall much in the way of specific names. Would absolutely love to go back and visit if this is the place!

The base in Budingen is closed now, I believe as of May 2007. I do remember Cafe Valhalla, had many a good time there, last time was in Budingem was late 90's and unless they move they moved its a Chinese restuarant.

Stationed from 83-85. Recon Plt, HHT, 3/12 Cav. Met my wife of 23 years there. I get back now & then to visit my mother-in-law. Can't believe this base is still there & Gelnhausen closed. Got out of there every weekend, but now it's my favorite place to visit. Anybody remember Valhalla's? Best Jägerschnitzel anywhere. Thanks for posting these pics!

This was my home town.My father(Dan)was stationed in budingen around late 80's and early 90's.That is where my father and mother met and married.What an outstanding solder.At 23 he fell in love with a german woman and also adopted her two children.He has been the best thing that has ever happened to our family. love you daddy!!!!

She was raised in Budingen, GE, had a German mom and American dad, and spoke fluent German and English; her age would be around 38 to 41 years of age; she did attend the American Univerity of Maryland in Munich, GE around 1984 time frame.

She was like a little sister to me in the early 1980's (1981 to 1984)and I would like to recontact her to see how she is doing in life. So if anyone can get me in contact with her it would be greatly appreciated.

By the way I was in Budingen from 1981 to 1984 in C Troop 3/12 Cav.

I was stationed here from Oct 69 to May 71, SGT E5 11D40 in a clerk position for Capt. Stanley Chrisitian JR. HHT 3/12 Cavalary. When I arrived they asked if I could type, amazing what a semester of typing in high school got me. What fond memories these pictures bring back. I am planning a trip back to Budingen in 2009.

I throughly enjoyed the country and the German People and beer. I wasn't always the First Sargent favorite and remember a lot of KP. I did go to Garmish Partiken (?)Bavarian to learn to assemble 8" nuclear rounds. With refelection as an 18 year old; I didn't really know what was going on. As a legislator, I dined with a group of German Legislators and the guy I was sitting next to and I figured out that we both had pulled guard in the Fulda Gap.

He was from the eastern part of Germany and had served in the East German Army.

I was stationed in Budingen with Hdqtrs Company 2/83rd as a S2 clerk. I screwed up and got transfer to C-battery and the guns. I served there from November 1963 to Jan 1965 when I was tranfered to V-Corp Arty in Darmstadt. I had not figured out what was going and then the news that the President was shot came.

I lived in Budingen from 1988-1991. I was in D BTRY 3/5 ADA. My youngest son was born in the krankenhaus there in 1989. Budingen will always be part of my life. Such a beautiful place. I hope to make it back someday. I know my son will want to go and see where he was born. I used to live in the villages of Orleshausen and Rinderbugen.

My wife and I just returned from a wondeful trip to Germany and the highlight was our visit to Budingen where we lived (2/83rd FA) from 1968-70. Sad to see the post all closed down but Budingin was memorable, just as Tim's pictures below have captured.
The castle now has a hotel which was a great place to stay. The Bleffe still serves great meals-oh so amny good memories.

Thanks again to Tim for sharing his Budingen pictures. If you ever can-go back for a visit.

I was an E5 in the 71st Ordnance Battalion on Pioneer Casern in Hanau from 1973 to 1976. When I got out of the army in '76 and returned to Seattle, I thought it would be easy to go back to Hanau anytime I wanted. Hmmm, not so easy. Try as I might, I've never been able to get a long enough vacation to do it. Its, still my dream though. They were the best years of my life.

I was Station in Budingen From 73 thru 75. I all ways wanted to go back. This Town was a very peaceful place and beautiful. The climate was havenly.
Swimming in the summer, and bundling up in the winter.
My regret is, I did not fully did not apprecate why I was there. It took time to realalize, too much time, until I could look back and see the beauty of the People, the food,wine, beer. The spring days of taking your sweet heart and just laying in the field in side the walls of the castle. Or just watching a game of futball. Cheering for the team of your choise.

I was in HHB 2/83, FDC from 68-70, best years of my life....went through 'Right of Passage'while stationed there......

From 1994 to 2004, returned 2 times a year from Iowa where I now live to attend all the Fest's. In fact I live about an hour south of the Amana colonies which was founded by Budingen migrants back around 1840. There is a restaurant in Amana called the Ronneburg and has a painting on the wall of the Ronneburg castle in Budingen. I have exchanged menus from both places over the years.

My office today has photo,s of Budingen and includes cobble stones from the streets there!

A very special place in this world.....!

My dad, Sgt. Wilborn Jones, was stationed there from 1961 thru 1964. My mother, siblings and I joined him in 1962-1964. I went to 3rd & 4th grades at the American Dependent School in Gelnhausen. I have many fond memories of both Budingen and Gelnhausen and wonder what ever happened to my best friends Mary Faith Alacon and Mary Louando, and the wonderful German family we met there, Heir and Frau Marx. Heir Marx would dress up as Kris Kringle and they taught us the beloved German tradition of putting our shoes outside the door at Christmas for candy and goodies. I've returned to Germany, but not to this area. I would really love to some day.

My dad was stationed in Budigen from 1967-1969 and I loved it there!!!! I went to grammar school in Gelnhausen. It was a great time to be a kid and a great time to be in Budigen. I will always have awesome memories growing up in Germany for 10 years (the carnavals, swimbad, bakeries, etc.) and the German folks were always soooo kind and wonderful to us.

Man this is great I remember when my dad was station in Budingen from 76 to 79. But my fondest memories was the DYA football team I played on winning V-Corp Championship in 77 consider we were one of the smallest base in the region, we did end up losing against the VII-Corp Championship. But I just remember having a great time plus we beat the crap out of G-Town(Gelnhausen) that in itself was enough for me since had to go to school in G-town and they were always trying to put us down.

My heart is breaking when I hear the news that Buedingen Army will be closed..
That place was so special . I grew up with americans and they really do belong to Buedingen..

My husband and I were married at the post chapel on Armstrong Post, in Budingen, in 1963 (Chaplain Joe Mills performed the simple ceremony), and we lived in Budingen, with a warm and wonderful German family, the Bansemers, for a couple of years. Russ was statoned there with the 83rd and I was a substitute teacher at the American Dependent School in Gelnhausen. We have been back to this idyllic setting many times throughout the years, as have our children. Members of our deal German family have also traveled to us in the U.S. several times. We have shared joys and sorrows...weddings, birthday parties, births, deaths, and trips to Italy together. This definitely has been a rich cultural exchange, and an education far beyond what one gets in a textbook. We also have kept in touch with several American friends whom we met while living in Budingen. We have a few pictures of me standing beside the grumpy statue,Ludwigstor, pinching his ear. There are several of them, taken during different trips in various years. Maybe I'll try to post them... We've been to Rothenburg, et. al., but nothing surpasses the charm and history of our dear Budingen. Wish I could say that it remains the same, but not. The building boom seems to have taken over there, same as much of the world. We have lost track of several of our army buddies from those mid 1960s days, and would love to re-establish contact. Where are you, Sepulveda? Where are you, Giordonas? Where are you, Bob and Becky McCaughtry? And, where are you, Gracia Brown? Her husband was a cook on the post. Gracia read her way, backwards, through the collection at the library on the post. I remember being so impressed when she got to Proust... I am amazed at how many of you share this Budingen experience with us, and am not surprised that it was a positive experience for all of you.

I lived in Budingen from 84-86. My first apartment was part of the castle wall (the attic was the lookout tower) and then I moved to the Markplatz (sp?). I so desperately miss it there. Beautiful city, wonderful people and great memories! I hope to get back there one day soon.

I am originally from there, but have since immigrated to Canada. As I am planning a trip 'home' I was looking for photos from there... We never end up taking photos of the town we live in for some reason... So, your great shots are what I show my friends now, in order to explain to them where I am from! Can't wait to go now, I haven't been there in almost 20 years!

I was stationed in Budingen between 72-74 with the 509th Ord Detachment. Your pictures bring back some great memories of friends and happy times. One day I hope to take my family for a visit. Great pictures Thanks again

I was stationed in Budingen in 1957-'58 with the 83rd Recon Bat 3rd Arm Div. Have some great memories of the town & people. Nearly 50 years later, I am digitizing my 35mm slides to convert to DVD. Fortunately, I wrote details on the slide mounts at the time that I'm now using for titleing my JPEG images. Enjoyed your pics; the town will probably look pretty much the same in another 50 years!

My wife and I were assigned to 1-1 Cav from 2001 until Nov 2003. We met many wonderful friendly people while assigned there. We hope to go back for a visit in 2007. We have wonderful memories, thanks for the photos.

My family was stationed there from '89 - '92. My brothers and I graduated from Hanau. I loved it there. It was a beautiful and timeless place to live.

S.Smith Just received a phone call from my son who has just arrived at Budingen with his armny assignment. I could not be happier for him. It looks beautiful and will allow him to visit his girlfriend in Poland. I hope to visit while he is stationed there.

I was stationed there in the early '90's and loved it. Plan to take my kids over one day when they are older.

Great pictures. I was stationed there from 1980-1983. One of the best tours I had in my 22 years in the Army

I lived there from 1978 - 83. I went to Elementary school in Gelnhausen and started high school in Hanau. There were a lot of good memories in that little town.

Great pictures. I lived there in the late 60s early 70s as an army brat.
Great place to have lived as a kid. I went back in 86 to show my wife and now plan to take my 15 yr old daughters
