Thanks very much, Sally, Michael, and Hal. Hal, I think it depends on what the bird is
doing. My observation is that when they are hovering, their wings often seem
to go in a figure 8 motion. I'm sure if you Google your question,
you will get some valid answers. There have been considerable high-speed photo studies that
would likely answer your question.

Wonderful image Terry.
l wonder what percentage of images capture the wings in the
UP position and how many the opposite.
The wings either make a brief stop or small apparent slowing down
at rotation at each end (like a figure 8). You probably know the mechanics of the wing strokes. l'd be interested to know.
