When I saw the thumbnail, I thought is it a volcone rim or lave flow.
Then I thought, is it some mad looking northern lights.
Then I guessed right, yeah right!!! I like it Jim.

What is it???

Its actually a homemade miniture hot air balloon. I was at the beach after sunset and saw a man light this latern like thing. After a couple of minutes he carried it to the water's edge and let it go in the air. Then I realized what it was. I just opened the shutter and tracked it upward for about 30 seconds and got this very unusual light trail as it spiraled toward the sky.
