Hairy Woodpecker, male

Arastradero Preserve

When I photographed this woodpecker, I thought it was the usual Downy. When I looked at the picture I noticed the longer-than-usual bill, and checked with Mike Rogers, who confirmed that it is a Hairy. In addition to the bill length, Mike noted the absence of white spots on the wing coverts and of black spots on the white outer tail feathers as identifying features.
