Ross's and Snow Geese, full-size picture

Merced NWR

This picture is reproduced at full size for a closer look at the geese, so the differences between Ross's and Snow Geese can be better seen. Ross's are smaller, have more rounded heads and proportionally smaller bills, and lack the prominent dark "grinning patch" of the Snows; they also generally lack the orange-tinged heads seen on many Snows, including those in this picture, which results from staining by the iron-rich mud into which Snow Geese thrust their heads when feeding.

Be sure to view this picture sized to "Original;" it will overflow your monitor, and you can get a closer look at individual geese by scrolling around. The picture sized for normal computer viewing is at http://www.pbase.com/image/148376204 .
