This Ornifolks tour to southeast Brazil, led by Guy Kirwan, in October 2005 proved extremely successful, producing all those birds that one particularly desires from a trip to this region. We enjoyed great looks at large family of Brazilian Mergansers Mergus octosetaceus, both Giant Batara cinerea and White-bearded Antshrikes Biatas nigropectus, a group of Cherry-throated Tanagers Nemosia rourei, the secretive Elegant Mourner Laniisoma elegans, several Swallow-tailed Cotingas Phibalura flavirostris (a support cast to the tanagers!), Buff-throated Purpletuft Iodopleura pipra, the highly range-restricted and beautiful Black-hooded Antwren Formicivora erythronotos, Restinga F. littoralis, Serra F. serrana and Salvadori's Antwrens Myrmotherula minor, Three-toed Jacamar Jacamaralcyon tridactyla and, of course, a group of Red-billed Curassows Crax blumenbachii. We visited the following sites during the course of the trip: Itatiaia National Park, Ubatuba and Parati, the cerrados around Itirapina, Serra da Canastra National Park, Serra do Cipo, RPPN do Caraca, Faz. Pindobas IV, Sooretama Biological Reserve and Linhares CVRD reserve, Praia Seca, the Sumidouro road and, finally, Serra dos Orgaos National Park.
