Huia Settlers' Museum

Manned by a team of dedicated volunteers, many of whom are direct descendents of the orginal settlers, this fine museum has a fascinating collection of local artifacts, pictures and paintings. Featured are references to the sinking of the 'Orpheus,' a disaster (7th Feb 1863) that resulted in the largest loss of life in New Zealand's maritime history. Of 259 persons on board, 179 lives were lost. Also on display is a fine collection of material relating to the early industries in the area, particularly Kauri log milling.
Should anybody wish to use these images, please make reference to Huia Settlers Museum, to whom I am grateful for giving me unlimited access to their displays. I also extend my special thanks and appreciation to Isabel Sutherland, for her constant and invaluable assistance and advice. The museum is open each Sunday afternoon from 1.30pm to 4.30pm, visits outside of those hours can also be arranged.
