Now more of an industrial estate than a shipyard, the tall shed remains, for now, as a sign of the once thriving ship industry along the river.

To the left of the shed, the former Dutch navy ship luymes can be seen which was at one time a project of mr willment.

The intention was to convert the former hydrographic survey vessel into a large luxury yacht but this never came to fruition and apart from one spell in a drydock where the hull was cleaned and painted the ship remained laid up in the same place for over 30 years before being broken up for scrap at new Holland along the river humber.

The Story:

I used to live very close to where luymes was laid up in southampton and managed to get onboard a few times as a child, it used to fascinate me.

I remember it went away once and I was sad but it came back again with the hull painted black and it seemed like it was finally going to be made into a yacht but nothing else happened and eventually the mast was cut off and she got towed to the scrapyard, such a shame!

I never got a chance to take some good photos!

I didn't know about the history of the ship or where it came from until I first got the internet and your site was the first one I found and finally I knew the story behind the ship!
